Firefighters rescue dogs from burning townhouse

encountered smoke and fire coming from the basement level of the two-story,
end-unit home when they arrived Sept. 4 at approximately 10:30 a.m. It took
about 10 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The
two residents weren’t home, but firefighters found two dogs. One was unconscious
and was having difficulty breathing. Paramedics used a pet mask to provide
oxygen to the dog who began to improve immediately. Both dogs were
taken to a local animal hospital for additional care.

Damage
is estimated at $62,000. Fire investigators have not yet determined the cause
of the fire. The house, close to the Lincolnia Road /Old Columbia Pike intersection, did have smoke alarms, and they were activated. The residents
were displaced and declined Red Cross Support.
