Flags line streets for Memorial Day
Every resident of the Broyhill Crest neighborhood in Annandale has a small American flag planted by their curb for Memorial Day, thanks to the efforts of realtor Vivianne Couts and dozens of volunteers. The flag project is sponsored by the Couts Group at Coldwell Banker.

Fourteen teams of two to four people each put 1,200 flags in the ground and handed out 100 more to passersby.
Rachel Martin and Pablo Amaya, the owners of PR Performance Fitness, took part, along with Broyhill Crest residents.
“We’re doing it because it makes the neighborhood look nice,” Couts says. The project started three years ago with 500 flags and has expanded every year since then.
“We get tons of thank yous. Kids love them, and people even offer us water,” she says. The volunteers get together for brunch afterwards to celebrate completion of the project.
Volunteers plan to pick up worn-out flags in June. People can put the flags back out for July 4, or if they want to dispose of them, Couts suggests they take them to the flag collection box in front of the American Legion post at 4206 Daniels Ave. in Annandale.
