Former Rite Aid drug store is now Walgreens

A Walgreens drug store opened Feb. 14 at 6053 Leesburg Pike in the Culmore area of Bailey’s Crossroads. It has a pharmacy offering flu shots and other immunizations, along with health and beauty items, greeting cards, snacks, and other items.

The building formerly housed a Rite Aid drug store. The Walgreens company purchased nearly 2,000 Rite Aid stores in 2017 and began converting them to Walgreens. Before it was a Rite Aid, it was an Eckerd drug store. Rite Aid acquired the Eckerd Corp. in 2007.

When Eckerd announced plans to build the store in 2000, there was strong opposition from the Latino community, as the project was constructed on a soccer field and the company failed to reach out to residents.
