Franconia police district sets up youth engagement council

The Fairfax County Police Department’s Franconia District Station is launching a Youth Engagement Council for high school students and young adults age 18-25 who live in the area served by the station.
The Franconia Police District covers a large section of the Annandale area south of Little River Turnpike.
The Youth Engagement Council will provide a forum for listening, discussion, education, and activities. Council members will identify issues and collaborate on solutions on matters affecting young people.
“It’s so important that we have ongoing conversations and dialogue with youth and learn about things that are impacting youth,” says Capt. Greg Fried, commander of the Franconia Police District. “Let’s find ways that we can collaborate together to seek solutions to strengthen our community.”
Master Police Officer Eric Nelson, community outreach coordinator at the Franconia station, says the council will give youths an opportunity to have a voice in how the county should move in relation to the police. “Hopefully, we can bridge that gap and answer some of these questions and work together as a team,” he says.
“I don’t know what this will look like, where it may go, but in my heart, I truly believe this is the place to start,” Fried says.
Young people interested in joining the council can apply here.
