The public is invited to a free concert with Kirsten Warfield and Present Company next Sunday, Jan. 12, 7 p.m. at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 6800 Columbia Pike, Annandale.
Present Company takes the classical brass quintet and adds the beat of drums and digital effects to create a contemporary sound that freely mixes genres. The program, “Scapes for Brass and Percussion,” aims to move the listener through different landscapes, moodscapes, and mindscapes via an eclectic mix of original numbers and creative new arrangements of old standards.
Warfield, a native of Fargo, N.D., was the first woman trombonist in the history of the U.S. Army Band’s “Pershing’s Own.” She is principal trombone with the Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic and teaches the instrument at Episcopal High School in Alexandria.
Heck of a concert!!! Ms. Warfield rocked her trombone, and the other equally talented musicians shined on their instruments. The selections were distinctive and eclectic, and it was hard to tell whether the audience or the players were having more fun. Catch this group if you see them scheduled again in the area!
