Free concerts in Annandale parks depend on public support

The weather was perfect last night for the Jon Carroll Band,
the first 2013 show in the Spotlight by Starlight concert series at Mason District
Park. Actually, the first performance had been scheduled for Sunday but it was rained out.
The free concerts are totally funded
by Friends of Mason District, corporate sponsors, and contributions from
individuals, Mason Supervisor Penny Gross told the audience. No county funds support the
series.

Since the Friends group started 34 years ago, it’s raised over
$200,000 for the park, Gross said. “We need your help to be able to continue these concerts.”
Gross urged people to contribute to the Spotlight by
Starlight shows by joining Friends of Mason District Park, dropping some cash
in the collection box at the back of the amphitheater, or sending a donation to the Fairfax County Park Foundation,
12055 Government Center Parkway, Suite 406, Fairfax, VA 22035.
There are two concerts at Mason District Park this weekend:
R&B performer Steve Bundick Friday night and the
National Concert Band of America on Sunday night. On Saturday, it’s Chinese
Cultural Heritage Night at Ossian Hall Park in Annandale. All those shows are 7:30 p.m. Check the blog calendar for other upcoming concerts. The shows are canceled if it’s raining. If it looks like rain, call 703/324-7469 before heading out.
