Free summer concerts draw crowds to Mason District Park

One of the recent shows at Mason District Park in Annandale featured
the Patty Reese Band. The video, shot by Bob Kovacs, is Reese’s version of “Piece of My Heart,” the Janis Joplin classic. “It’s not an easy song to do convincingly,
and Patty convinces from beginning to end,” says Kovacs.

On Aug. 9, Caravan of Thieves drew a large crowd to an eclectic performance, melding romantic lyrics with atonal sounds and unusual
percussion. The video here is a beautiful, romantic duet, “I Got You,” with the band’s married couple, Fuzz and
Carrie Sangiovanni.

A longer piece by Caravan of Thieves, “Monster,”
is on Kovac’s Annandale Arts You Tube channel. While most of the songs they
performed are originals, they brought down the house with their rendition of
Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

The next few free Spotlight by Starlight evening performances
at Mason District Park are Linwood Taylor (Texas swing/blues) on Aug. 21, Margot MacDonald (indie) on Aug. 23, and Rhodes Tavern Troubadours (roots) on Aug 25.
All those shows are 7:30 p.m. Bring the kids Saturday morning at 10 for the Great Zucchini.
On Aug. 24, it’s Peruvian Cultural Heritage
Night at Ossian Hall Park in Annandale. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. There are only a few more shows left in the 2013 Spotlight by Starlight series.
