Funds available for cooling assistance

Virginia’s Department of Social Services offers funds for cooling assistance to help vulnerable households deal with summer heat waves.
To be eligible, at least one household member must be age 60 or older, age 5 or younger, or designated as disabled by Social Security, Medicaid, or the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
Applications will be accepted through Aug. 16.
Funding is available for:
- Payment of electric bills to operate cooling equipment;
- Payment of an electric security deposit for new service;
- Repair of a central air conditioning system, heat pump, ceiling fan, attic fan, or whole house fan;
- Purchase of a whole-house fan, including ceiling or attic fans when there is no other working cooling equipment in the home; and
- Purchase and installation of a window unit air conditioner when there is no other working cooling equipment in the home.
