Gateway signage in the works for Seven Corners and Bailey’s Crossroads

Fairfax County is developing a gateway signage project for the Bailey’s Crossroads and Seven Corners commercial revitalization districts.

The Community Revitalization Section (CRS) of the Department of Planning and Development is partnering with the Crossroads and Corners Coalition and the office of Mason District Supervisor Andres Jimenez on the project.

CRS has retained the services of graphic design consultants Torti Gallas + Partners and Ashton Design to develop proposed signs and banners to define each area and give them a recognizable identity and brand.

An online survey will be launched on the CRS website on May 5 to solicit community input into the special characteristics and history that help define each area and how those things can be reflected in the design of gateway signage.

The signs and banners will help identify the boundaries of each area, highlight special places, and convey each community’s unique character, while putting them into context within the greater Mason District.

The survey will be the first step in the community engagement process for designing the gateway signs.

Following the survey, the graphic design consultants will create two concepts for each district and share them with the public for additional comment and refinement before the final designs are selected.

“This is a prime opportunity to guide the aesthetic identity and branding of Bailey’s Crossroads and Seven Corners to enhance the sense of place in each area,” says Alex Howle, program manager at CRS. He urges community members to “share your candid thoughts on the survey and encourage your friends and neighbors to participate in this exciting public process.”

  1. How much is this boondoggle gping to cost us* Why 8s our new superv8sor to change road s8gns and put up banners? Can he find nothing useful to do?

    1. That is correct. This is part of his cultural hub plan. Under this plan, you highlight racial diversity by putting up signs and stuff. And… there you have it.

  2. Will this new signage be able to compete with the thousands of Furniture Max going out of business signs littering every road shoulder and sidewalk in the area?

  3. I have a novel idea. Instead of spending money the county doesn’t have, how about saving some of our hard earned money in a rainy day fund for emergencies. I am sick and tired of hearing the county and the school board complain about the lack of money and the need to raise taxes. Both are run like it was the “old days” and commercial development took up a great deal of the slack from real estate taxes. THOSE DAYS ARE OVER!. Stop wasting my tax dollars on stupid unnecessary things until the economic situation in northern Virginia. Money should only be spent on what is necessary.

No more insane projects like Baileys Upper Elementary School. It would have made more sense to do a land swap and convert the public library adjacent to the original Baileys Elementary School. No more tearing down fire houses to grade level to build brand new fire houses. It would be more cost effective to rehabilitate the current facilities. They are not too old and can easily be remodeled and added to. No more sending a fire truck with ambulances on all runs. A firefighter/EMT can jump into the ambulance to ride with the crew.

If we as taxpayers have to now watch our spending then the county should be required to do so as well.

  4. Furniture max goes out of business every year and like a phoenix arises from the ashes. Where’s FFC’s Consumer Affairs Office? Where’s are district attorney??

  5. I like having the community identity being proudly displayed. Hopefully they will put it it on the correct side of the road unlike the Springfield sign which for westbound drivers is over the eastbound lanes. Big goof!
