Giant to take over Seven Corners Shoppers

The Shoppers in the Seven Corners Center.

The Shoppers at Seven Corners is going to be converted to a Giant grocery store, a representative of the shopping center confirmed, but wouldn’t say when this will happen or what sort of amenities the Giant will have.

The Shoppers at Landmark Plaza closed in June. A Giant opened in that space last month.

United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) agreed to acquire Shoppers’ parent company, Supervalu, for $2.9 billion in July. As part of the deal, the combined companies are selling Supervalu’s retail chains, which includes 52 Shoppers stores in the D.C. and Baltimore areas.

  1. I'm going to miss SFW. I first encountered them when they took over the Jumbo Supermarket location next to the now defunct Kmart on John Marr Dr. After that store closed, I followed SFW to Seven Corners. Now they're also vanishing from that location. What I'll miss the most is their refrigerated walk in beer room – Sparky

  2. Why can't we get a whole foods, we have enough giants! So frustrating, even the retail chains treat us like a dump.

  3. No!!!! Shoppers is the only store that carries a lot of authentic Latin food brands. This is terrible for the Latin community.

  4. Try Americana Grocery next to the Lake Barcroft Dam. Not only do they have excellent Latin food brands – they have an excellent meat section and real life butchers. Not all is lost.

  5. I figured this one would close, since several other Shoppers in the area have closed. I'm glad Giant is replacing it. Hopefully Giant can offer jobs to the current Shoppers employees.

  6. I will be sorry to see Shoppers go. They had great baked goods, friendly staff, and reasonable pricing. Everyone was helpful.

  7. Shoppers' prices are not very competitive compared to Giant, even though it's supposed to be a discount supermarket, and they have limited options for organic and natural foods items. The other Giants in the area are out of the way, so I'm glad they're opening here. Whole Foods is great for certain items, but it's not affordable for a lot of people.

  8. Does anyone know when Giant will be open in 7 Corners. I wish Shoppers had not closed- I really loved the store and I'll miss the staff.
