Glory Days Grill won’t be coming to Barcroft Plaza

Fairfax County shut down Han-Sung Oak in 2013 for failure to comply with building codes.

Plans for a Glory Days Grill at Barcroft Plaza on Columbia
Pike have fallen through. A couple of other non-restaurant tenants are being
considered for the site, which has been vacant since the Han-Sung Oak Restaurant closed in August 2013. A spokesperson for the shopping center owner, Federal Realty Investment Trust, won’t disclose the tenant until the agreement is finalized.

Jeff Newman, president of Glory Days Inc., is
disappointed the deal didn’t work out. Noting that there aren’t any other
similar casual restaurants/sports bars nearby, he said, “Barcroft would have
been perfect. Federal Realty thought so, too. But at the end of the day, it
comes down to numbers, and they feel they can do better.”

“We worked for a long time with Glory Days but just couldn’t
make it work,” said Ralph Ours, the leasing agent for Federal Realty. “Glory Days wasn’t able to pay as much rent
as other tenants and they wanted us  to spend a lot on improvements.”

“Restaurants are more complicated than most retail,” Newman
acknowledged. Moving there would have required a lot of demolition and
infrastructure improvements, such as grease traps and accommodations for the disabled.
Also, “restaurants typically have lower margins than other
types of retail,” he said. “We price our menu to be very, very affordable,
so we can’t pay top dollar on rent.”
Even if it didn’t work out for Glory Days, Newman believes
it would be good for the community if another restaurant would locate in
Barcroft Plaza. “We got to know some of the neighbors. They were excited about
having us there.”
Glory Days has 25 restaurants in Virginia, Maryland, West
Virginia, and Florida. The one closest to the Annandale area is in the Pan Am Shopping Center in Fairfax. Newman is actively searching for more locations. So
what about the long-empty former Bloom spot on Columbia Pike in Annandale? That won’t
work, Newman said, because there isn’t enough parking and Silverado’s is
already there in that shopping center.

  1. So a restaurant can't afford the rent in Annandale. Annandale, VA. Is this story an early April fool's joke? Is the realtor full of it? Is Glory Days full of it? What a shame.

Can't wait to welcome another drug store or nail salon.

    1. Stop with the belly-aching.

You have a wonderful "Super Pollo" in this shopping plaza which serves superb Peruvian chicken with all the fixins, a wide selection of beer, and complimentary flat-screen TVs.

Where is that Adam Goldberg fella with another one of his anti-racists remarks? He must be hanging out with his fellow pajama boys.

    2. Adam, you woke up, I thought you had moved and bailed on us. I was happy to lean that you were drinking beer and softly fallen into the crocuses.

Now you have two things to be sweet on: beer and crocuses. Isn't it nice to be in such a heavenly place – and we call it Annandale Bliss (to the tune of " and they call it puppy lovvvvveeeee."

    3. Did "oh please" just compare a Super Pollo to a full service restaurant and sports bar?

Is that Penny Gross' blogger account?

    4. Hey, I quite like the Super Pollo. Sure, I grab my food as quickly as possible and leave, but darn if they don't have good pollo a la brasa.

  2. This would be the perfect location to reopen the Safari Lounge. I can practically taste the goat meat.

  3. Annandale does not seem to be the choice for any good establishment to open up. Thank goodness Silverado's has stuck with us.

Looks like Mason District's leadership: the community and its government need to do a better job of selling the Dale instead of sending it down stream. Very unfortunate, so much potential and so little interest.

  4. Has anyone noticed that there is no bank in that shopping center? I'm sure we gotta have another bank, who cares about restaurants??

    1. Bank of America is on the corner and has been there for years. There used to be a Shell station in the parking lot, but that was before HT got there.

    2. Wait a minute, there has been a Bank of America branch in the building next to the drive-thru Starbucks for many years. I remember the lines there on the weekend.

Has this Bank of America branch really closed? Is the world really ending? Oh my, I have to drive by there and check out the carnage.

  5. That is a BIG disappointment. This area sure needs a decent restaurant. We do have a bank there – Bank of America has been there a while !

  6. Annandale will soon not only be the TitleMax capital, it is running a close second to becoming Vacancy Central!

    1. Me too, tell those idiots at the realty company that we are tired of them screwing us out of good establishments in our neighborhood. Federal Realty…….u suck!

  7. This would have been a great location. I think it would have helped the shopping center as well.

Too bad. Looking at non-restaurant tenants is not good either. I rarely visit this place although it is close to my home. Glory Days would have put this on my radar.

  8. I have heard, from very good sources, and this is fantastic news, that Glory Days Grill and Federal Reality have reached an agreement for the end cap space at Barcroft Plaza, where the DMV was proposed to have been located.

Not too sure when Glory Days Grill will be open, but I've heard that it could be later this fall or late winter.
