Glory Days Grill is coming to Barcroft Plaza, the company announced Oct. 4. The new restaurant is expected to open in summer 2017 in the vacant space at the end of the shopping center that had been occupied by a Korean restaurant that closed in 2013.
Glory Days had initially planned to move into that spot in 2015 but that deal fell through. Since then, there was a plan to open a Virginia DMV customer service center there. That proposal was was strongly opposed by local residents. and the DMV announced in January 2016 that it dropped plans for that move.
The new Barcroft Plaza location for Glory Days, a family-friendly sports-themed restaurant, will feature more than 7,000 square feet of dining, bar, and private banquet seating, with several TVs broadcasting sports, news, and entertainment programming.
There are 27 corporate and franchised Glory Days restaurants, including 15 in Virginia, five in Florida, six in Maryland, and one in West Virginia. The menu focuses on burgers, sandwiches, and wings, although the restaurants also offer a variety of entrees and appetizers.
“We are thrilled to welcome Glory Days Grill to the Lake Barcroft neighborhood,” said Kari Glinski, director of asset management at Federal Realty Investment Trust, which owns Barcroft Plaza. The community will benefit from “Glory Days’ commitment and deep ties to our local schools.”
The Falls Church restaurant will provide fundraising programs for schools and teams, and managers will accept applications for team sponsorships starting in the fall of 2017, the company states. Last year, Glory Days restaurants donated over $480,000 to schools and teams through sponsorships, fundraising, and other community programs.
“Like all Glory Days Grill restaurants,” the company says, “the Falls Church location will focus on product excellence with the highest standards in food quality and safety, a love of sports, and a dedication to the community.”

That's great. I'm sure Penny Gross and her minions would have liked to have stuck the DMV there, a few blocks away from the Mason District Government Building, but this will be much better for the neighborhood!

This provides me with even greater determination to fight against the meals tax. The Barcroft area has needed a neighborhood hangout for years. So, I refuse to allow Bulova and her cronies to diminish our good fortune by slapping us with a confiscatory tax.

If you haven't noticed that space has been empty for years and there is a shortage of American fare in the immediate area.I never went to the Korean bbq place, and the Skyline Buffalo Wild Wings is overcrowded on game days. I am thrilled I will be able to drive 3 minutes to a sports bar when I can't get my team on tv; even happier for my husband. Plus the convenient location will make it part of my rotation of "mediocre" fare–Silverado, Foxfire, Hunan Kitchen, Panera, Chipotle's.
Yes, I would love a Liberty Tavern or even a Hard Times in the area but compared to the recent proposals–DMV, temporary homeless shelter in the Senior Center's backyard– Glory Days is an absolute treasure. Call it managing expectations, but it sure beats the alternatives.
Its about time we get a watering hole for the dwindling minority of tax paying americans. If it was up to our politicians it could have been another tax sucking social service center.
I was really excited about this until I saw they are actively lobbying against the meals tax. The meals tax isn't hurting business in Arlington, Alexandria, DC, Falls Church City, Manassas, Herndon, Vienna, Fairfax City, Manassas Park, but sure go ahead and argue about paying an extra $2 on your $50 check.

I am against any restaurant or business that is in favor of additional taxes. Increasing taxes increases the cost of doing business that is passed on to the consumer, often me. I pay enough taxes already. If you don't, you can decide how much more you would like to pay and send a check to the jurisdiction of your choice. They will gladly take your money.
You should also be thrilled that FFX County just raised property taxes by $93 million, an average increase of $304 per homeowner (that is from the county's own website).
While government has its uses, it does not increase wealth. Further if FFX really wanted to improve thie school system (their primary pretense for the meals tax), the discussion would be about school choice, school vouchers and charter schools. Rather they are only interested in taking more money from taxpayers. My question to you would be when should the tax increases stop?

This tax creep is not doing anybody any favors. Obviously it is not solving the budget shortfall (hence seeking another $100 million in taxes after just getting $93 million more in real estate taxes).
Perhaps the government should take a closer look at the spending side of the budget issue because the revenue side is not the answer.
Again take comfort if the meals/prepared food tax doesn't pass, you can voluntarily pay as much in additional taxes as you like.
Our taxes are fitting of where we live, and complaining over a 4% meals tax when it comprises such an unbelievably tiny fraction of your overall burden is hilarious. Even property tax… it comprises what? a fraction of a percent of your total burden? Let's ignore for a moment that state and federal income tax – the majority of your burden by an order or two of magnitude, have remained flat or declining for three decades. I don't like paying taxes…who does? but let's try and maintain a semblance of perspective without resulting to "oh the humanity when will it stop! when do you draw the LINE people…"
Adam: Looking at a 4% meals tax in isolation is deceptive and you know it. We've had an unprecedented three annual unequalized property tax increases and, as I've stated here previously, three or four members of the BOS have indicated a willingness to continue ratcheting up taxes in response to whatever budget the school board proposes. I have little doubt that many of the residents who supported these BOS members are flush and don't mind picking everyone's pocket to funding their idyllic vision of a perfect county. However, the mere fact that my state and federal taxes are greater that my property taxes doesn't render the latter any less substantial. Besides, comparing taxes is pointless. It's the cumulative burden of taxes that matters and I suspect that many meals tax supporters have underestimated to amount this tax would cost them.
Anonymous10/5/16, 2:36 PM: Your "it's only a few cents more" argument was discredited long ago. The appropriate way to evaluate a tax is by measuring the impact it has on the current level of taxation. As you well know, that $50 tab you mention also carries an addition $3 sales tax. That creates a de facto 10% meals tax. And then there's the $10 – 15% tip most diners pay. So, including a meals tax, every restaurant tab will have a 20 -25% surcharge tacked on. And then there's the related question of whether a family can even dine at a restaurant for a mere $50. So, it's not simply about adding a couple of bucks. It's about running up the cost of dining to an extent that patrons will dine out less or not at all.
One more thought. I doubt if you have any idea how meals taxes affect business in the smaller cities around here. Most of them have enacted meals taxes because they have fewer options for raising revenue than Fairfax County. Moreover, I doubt if most County residents dine there often enough for those taxes to matter. Citing Arlington as an example is also deceptive. Arlingtonians have accepted the philosophy that they'll pay higher taxes in order to fund a higher level of community services than is currently available in Fairfax County. So, if you want to achieve parity with Arlington, you better be willing to pay considerably more in property taxes.
We are reaching Canadian and European levels of consumption taxes with little to show for it. When I lived in Toronto I think there was a 12 or 13 percent tax on restaurant meals when all taxes were combined.
They get socialized healthcare and better infrastructure and cheaper education; we get none of that.
That is part of the point–it's just another 4 cents on the dollar for dining out, and it was just another $304 per year to own my home. By that mindset as long as the tax increase is relatively small and incremental it is okay. But those tax burdens add up. Just because my local tax burden is smaller than my state and federal taxes does not mean it is too small and should be increased, it may only mean that my state and federal taxes are too large.
Further it ignores the fact that the BoS has not demonstrated responsible use of its current $4billion in revenue. It assumes spending more money on something, in this case public schools, equates to improved services. And, it completely ignores how much of the current tax funds are wasted–just one example spending $400k for a pro meals-tax mailing.
Perhaps, if the BoS was more responsible with taxpayer funds, was serious about improving children's education (vouchers, choice, charter schools), there would be less resistance to yet another tax increase.
Also, don't forget no matter how you spin it that this is a regressive tax. A person making $25,000 per year pays 4% or 10% total tax for his hotdog and slurpee from 7/11 as does the person making $250,000 per year. Although for some that might be a reason to pass the meals tax.
As to whether our taxes are fitting of where we live that is a conclusion that many would disagree with (for instance, retirees and others on a fixed income who leave this area for places with a lesser tax burden).
Enough with your Trumpian calls for vouchers, school "choice" and charter schools. They are nothing but insidious tools of right-wing nuts to dismantle public education in this country.

To Adam Goldberg and others who are in favor of the Meals Tax, please hear this liberal democrat (me) out. This tax is cruel because it arbitrarily places the burden on restaurants, an already struggling sector of wafer-thin profits. What did they do to deserve this? Reminds me of the classic short story "The Lottery," where the community randomly picks a "winner" every year to stone to death… so that the crops will grow better. I am not in the restaurant business, but I'm not going to sit silently while their bones get picked over. What if they chose your particular profession in the next "lottery?" "Ladies and gentlemen, this year's expensive tax bill will be paid by…drum roll… Opticians! Thank you, opticians. You've just been volunteered."

Why is the BOS even posing a meals tax? Why not a hotel tax that wouldn't impact our already overtaxed residents?
I am against the meals tax. The way our school board foolishly spends money for their perceived political correctness agendas I don't want to give them another dime. They need to stick to educating our students, not advancing political agendas.

As for the Meals Tax, it can go to the same place the DMV went, back to Arlington. At first I said ok, but when I found out they were slamming prepared foods like rotisserie chickens at the grocery store with his tax, then I thought the BOS can take that meals tax and shuv it or use their raises to support the overcrowded schools. Which btw they caused by not affectively cracking down on over populated single family rentals.
Just say NO to the meal tax. Seniors depend on prepared foods from grocery stores. Seniors are on fixed incomes. The BoS=Board of Stupids are moronotrons for taxing prepared foods. I get the restaurant tax and understand maybe its needed, but the prepared food tax puts a burden on those who are just making it from week to week.
If the BoS is so worried about their school budget then it better start cracking down on the boarding houses in our neighborhoods with so called "family members."
The BoS in Fairfax continues to become more stupid while the BoS in adjoining counties seem to be getting smarter at growing their economies and services. Those municipalities have a meals tax but they put it to good use: good roads, sidewalks, clean gutters, good schools,bike lanes that actually go somewhere, parks and not to a bunch of illegals.

Mason grew because it was a less expensive alternative to Arlington and was convenient for commuting to the District. Much of that appeal disappeared with the expansion of Metro and when businesses started moving to Tysons and Dulles. What's left are aging subdivisions and declining infrastructure. If I'd hadn't moved here when thing were still relatively decent, I too would have moved. There's nothing going on in Mason that hasn't been improved upon elsewhere in the County. With no end to taxes in sight, it's plainly not worth hanging around after retirement. So, I'm looking forward to saving a bundle by eventually moving to Fauquier or even farther out.

The BOS is pitching this tax as a form of property tax relief yet hasn't made any promises to cap future property tax increases. Instead, the BOS is asking voters to hand them a wad of cash without any specifics. The 70% that goes to education might go straight to teacher salaries. If it does, that practically guarantees that the school board will come right back with another huge budget request for whatever else its members can dream up. The remaining 30% isn't enough to offer any property tax relief. It will most likely be used to fund those less worthy project the BOS has previously had to defer. Without any commitment by the BOS or school board to reduce or at least freeze spending, the meals tax money will quickly be relegated to just another line item on the budget. The bottom line here is simple: the BOS expects property owners to believe that substituting one tax for another will save them money without providing any evidence to support that claim.
Why doesn't the County tax the parents, particularly the ones that keep having more kids than they can afford. People on fixed incomes should not have to lay out this money because certain individuals cant control themselves.

Fairfax is broke. It is not one of the best counties in the nation. That is all hype. FFX had to get state senators to beg for a triple AAA rating from the very rating companies that gave us 2008.
Fairfax is a sanctuary county and Mason is a sanctuary district. Bulova is on record for this. She and Penny will not enforce immigration laws and FFX's own occupancy code enforcement. Yet, FFX does little to address affordable housing needs in any viable measures.
Mason is a dump and everyone knows it. The western part of the country lives high at our expense.
The FCSB chair is foolishly pursuing and spending big bucks on a name change for JEB Stuart HS even though the community and students said no change when surveyed. Chair and Mason Rep. Sandy Evans is inserting her political will on her constituents and the FCSB seem to be going along with her. If this is the way FCSB spends my money, I don't want to give them another dime. This political agenda does absolutely nothing to help foster better education of our students. it is frivolous and the premise for the change is based on serial lies.

I feel bad you see it that way. Myself, my family, and most of my friends & their families like it a lot here. It's not perfect, but it's a decent enough place. It must really suck to live under the impression that everything is awful.
