Granddaddy’s Skillet opens in Pinecrest Plaza

Granddaddy’s Skillet, the soul food restaurant in Pinecrest Plaza, has finally opened Feb. 3 after yet another setback.

The restaurant was initially supposed to open in late 2020, but installing a new ventilation system took longer than expected. The owners, Roxanne and Andre David, had to replace the ventilation system and remove the pizza oven from the building, which formerly housed Flippin’ Pizza.

Then an expected opening on Feb. 1 didn’t happen because a worker accidentally triggered the fire suppression system, spewing green stuff all over the place, Andre says.

The subcontractor paid for the cleanup, and Granddaddy’s Skillet is up and running, serving up its specialty, fried fish, along with chicken wings, collard greens, mac and cheese, pork chops, meatloaf, potato salad, biscuits and gravy, and much more.

The food, Andre says, “puts you in the mind of what you can get down South.” He especially recommends the fish, which could be catfish, whitefish, rockfish, or croaker.

Opening a restaurant has been the lifelong dream of Andre’s wife, Roxanne, he says. Granddaddy’s Skillet honors her grandfather, Percy Ledbetter, who ran Percy’s Seafood Restaurant in Pittsburgh for many years.

Roxanne was the cafeteria manager at Poe Middle School for 26 years. Andre works as a bus driver for Fairfax County Schools.

Granddaddy’s Skillet, at 6544 Little River Turnpike, is open 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and is  closed on Sundays.

  1. Looks yummy, cannot wait to try it out. Its about time that we some good variety of food choices in what I hear is coined the "Dump."

    1. No one has coined it the Dump. One individual who trolls this blog refers to the neighborhood with that epithet, but since he refuses to use his name it is clear he is not to be taken seriously. There are many people quite delighted to live here.

    2. James, it sounds like you are biased. How do you know its a male, it may be a female or a trans. And I protest your comment, I have heard the "Dump" used many times over the years. Because I live here, I do find it a rather troubling term, however I also believe that the lack of good district leadership and the irresponsibility of new comers trashing up their properties may have contributed to Mason earning that epithet.

    3. Nice use of a straw man with the whole trans thing. There is no “earned epithet” here, come off it already dude.

    4. Since you opened the door – I may have made a not-irrational decision that the usual dumpy interlocutor is male (prove me wrong) but by your claiming that they are EITHER male or female OR "trans" shows a limited understanding of gender. "Irresponsibility of new comers [sic] trashing up their properties" is perhaps even more of a stretch than my use of gender. How do you know they are new? How do you know they own the properties that you claim are "theirs?" Interviews? Neighborhood chats? NextDoor posts? The messiest property I have ever seen in Mason was a neighbor – long-standing, not "new" – who hoarded so much that she (really, it WAS a woman) filled her three cars outside with garbage until they caught on fire and burned to the ground. Now, THAT was a dump.

    5. Well she must be procreating James, beware she may be a she devil. The Trump administration was full of them . As for the new comers, you must be blind. The first thing they do is cut down trees, next they leave their crap on the curb and they dont know how to pick up trash. They leave plastic water bottles on their property, Its not the majority but one or two can take down a whole street when it comes to property values.

    6. What are you referring to as "the dump"? Annandale on the whole? I'm guessing you don't, in fact, live here.

  2. Looks promising. I would hardly refer to the area as a "dump." While there may be alot of thrift stores and korean bbqs in the area, there is also an exclusive golf course across the street.

    1. korean bbqs are anything but dumps, have you stepped into one? Korean stores are usually nice inside and classy. I'd pick a Korean BBQ restaurant over an exclusive golf course anyday. For anyone who refers this place as a dump, they obviously never ventured outside of the DMV area.

    2. Exclusive golf course?? Last time I checked it's a public course run by Fairfax County and is open to anyone.

  3. What's this about "the dump"? Absurd. It's a nice area. People who think that area is a "dump" are sheltered-suburbanite to the core. There's a lovely historic garden park right behind the shopping center; a fancy golf course across the street; $700k+ houses all around the area; and nice shops/restaurants in the same strip-mall. I really like the blog, but a lot of the cranky boomers who post on these comment boards need some fresh air in their lives.

  4. Literally nobody except one clown calls Annandale "the dump".

Anyway, I'm ready for some soul food. Strange time to open a restaurant though.

  5. We live overseas and are moving back this summer. We can't wait to try this restaurant! The whole family is excited. Best of luck and we will see you soon.

  6. Does ANYBODY know if this restaurant is safe for people with Celiac Disease? I would really like to try this place out because I LOVE me some southern cookin' but … Celiac Disease is not a choice for me and I have to be VERY careful with my food choices. Anybody?

    1. I'm sure if you call the restaurant they will tell you. I don't have the condition myself but I would hesitate to deal with the consequences of potentially inaccurate third party information.
