Green Spring volunteers get grant for a retaining wall

The retaining wall next to the parking lot at Green Spring Gardens.

The Fairfax County Park Authority Board approved an $11,000 Mastenbrook grant to the Friends of Green Spring Gardens (FROGS) for the construction of a stone retaining wall along a trail.

The 165-foot-long wall will help stabilize a slope and reduce sediment-laden runoff flowing into Turkeycock Run. Currently, erosion from the slope can clog the trail with mud, debris, and water.

Plans call for the new wall to be constructed of cinderblock filled with concrete and finished with a stone veneer closely matching the existing retaining wall near the main parking lot at Green Spring Gardens. The wall has been designed to complement the historic Beatrix Farrand landscape at the Historic House.

The total project cost is $55,825. In addition to the grant, FROGS donated $11,000, and $33,825 is from bond funds.

  1. Visited for the first time last month after living here for 20 years. Nice layout and gardens. I was impressed by the expansiveness of it. But, it seemed to be a bit unkept. Specifically back by the Townhouse gardens. Is it a lack of funding, or volunteers, or …is it just me or the time of year?

    1. Could certainly be the time of year and all the rain, I'm having trouble staying on top of everything popping up in my yard and gardens!
