Greidinger to challenge Cook for Braddock seat on FX CO board
Democrat Marc Greidinger, an attorney from Springfield specializing in environmental and conservation issues, is challenging Republican incumbent John C. Cook for the Braddock District seat on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
Other Democrats are expected to join the supervisor race in Braddock, as well, possibly including Christopher Wade, a management consultant and member of the board of the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce. A primary will be held Aug. 23.
The Braddock District includes most of the Annandale business district and most Annandale neighborhoods south and west of the beltway.
Megan McLaughlin, the chair of the Fairfax Education Coalition and the president and co-founder of FairGrade, is running for the Braddock District seat on the Fairfax County school board held by Tessie Wilson.
Cook kicks off his re-election campaign tomorrow evening at a public reception at Interstate World Wide Relocation, 5801 Rolling Road, Springfield, 7:30 p.m.
Cook, a lawyer and former president of the Kings Park Civic Association, was elected to the Board of Supervisors in March 2009 in a special election to fill the unexpired term of Sharon Bulova, who was elected chairman of the Board of Supervisors in January 2009. Bulova was elected to fill the seat vacated by former chairman Gerry Connolly, who was elected to Congress in November 2008.
The press release announcing his re-election campaign calls Cook “a voice of reason on the board, calling for holding the line on property tax payments, confronting a $1.2 billion unfunded liability in the county’s pension system, and continuing to look for savings, consolidations, and outsourcing of county programs where possible.” He calls “constituent services and community building the hallmarks of his term.”

In case there is doubt that a reasonable voice on the board is necessary, consider that yesterday they voted to subsidize housing billed as luxury. John Cook being one of three such voices voted NO. Even if the county did not have a $1.2 billion public pension hole, or a near half-billion budget deficit, no government entity should be subsidizing luxurious housing. The real question is why is the Fairfax County BOS moving in the opposite direction of the rest of the country? Even the leftist Governors in CA and NY are facing their economic problems, why is that not happening here?
Again, in case there is doubt that John Cooks reasonable voice on the board is not only necessary but critical, consider the curious case of the old Lorton incinerator which the Board of Supervisors is contemplating buying for hundreds of millions of dollars. To make the absurdity even greater, Fairfax County owns the land on which the incinerator sits. Added folly: Fairfax wouldn't see any profit from buying the incinerator until 2029, during which time new technology and innovation probably would have come online, thereby rendering the Lorton incinerator even more obsolete.
Fairfax needs Supervisors with excellent common sense and intelligence and a sense of how the real world works. John Cook fills the bill for Braddock District.
