H Mart offers good value for groceries

One of the best reasons to “love where you live” for Broyhill Crest and Columbia Pines residents is the good selection of places to shop for groceries, reports Deb Craggs. Her current favorite for fish and fresh vegetables is the Korean-owned H Mart on Heritage Drive in Annandale. Although it’s a bit farther away, it’s worth the trek across Little River Turnpike.

“The vegetables are fresh and relatively cheap compared to Giant, Safeway, and Harris Teeter,” she says. “Many of H Mart’s produce suppliers appear to be the same suppliers to the ‘big three’ markets. Because of the volume of shoppers at H Mart, the produce is constantly attended to.”

“The fish counter is filled with all sorts of variety and provides quite an education for a salmon, shrimp, and Mrs. Paul’s kind of gal,” says Craggs.” The market is bustling with activity, and on the weekends there are many tasting stations both in and outside the store. “Unless it’s a sample of fruit, I’m not familiar with most of the offerings, but I don’t mind trying a small bite anyway.”
The Heritage Shopping Center is small, but full of ambiance, shade trees, large sidewalks and common areas. With a little bit of upgrading, it could become an even more pleasant place to spend time and money.

  1. Another good thing about HMart is it's open til 11 p.m. seven days a week. You can find live tilapia in the seafood section as well as live lobsters. There's a large variety of dried seaweed and other Korean delicacies, but the dairy section is minimal. That may change however, as the store is being expanded.
