Hedetniemi of Annandale named Fairfax County Citizen of the Year

The Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations has
named Janyce Hedetniemi of Annandale, an at-large member of the Planning
Commission, the 2013 Fairfax County Citizen of the Year.

Hedetniemi also represents the Braddock District on the
Tysons Land Use Task Force and has also as an at-large member of the Fairfax County Park Authority Board and chair of the Fairfax County Transportation Advisory Commission. In 2012, she helped form and served as the first chair of
the Braddock District Land Use and Environmental Management Committee.

Before her retirement from the National Institutes of
Health, Hedetniemi was director of the NIHOffice of Community Liaison, where she created a national model for federal/community
collaboration.
Hedetniemi served as president of the Braddock District Council for two years. She was has been president of the Oak Hill Citizens Association in Annandale since 1997, and helped save the Oak Hill manor house,
built in 1790, from being torn down by developers.

At the banquet, the Fairfax Federation will recognize as
2013 Citation of Merit honorees Tena Bluhm, chair of the Fairfax Area Commission on Aging, and author/naturalist Kathy Kaplan.

Kaplan was awarded the Reston Citizens Association 2013
Citizen of the Year award for her work on behalf of the county’s library system. She currently serves as the chair of the Fairfax
Federation’s Library Committee and helped defeat a proposal to restructure the library system that would have reduced staff, eliminated educational
requirements for employees, and eliminated youth services at libraries.

Bluhm has worked tirelessly on behalf of older adults and helped
plan two major seminars presented by Fairfax County on universal design and the
village concept, which enable seniors stay in their homes. She is president of
the George Mason Forest Homeowners Association and serves on the Braddock
District Council.

The Federation will also recognize the dedicated and
distinguished careers of retiring lawmakers Del. Jim Scott (53rd District), Rep. Frank Wolf (10th
District), and Rep. Jim Moran (8th District) for their service to Fairfax
County residents.
