Home and garden tour offers peek inside historic Holmes Run Acres

The house on 3419 Gallows Road looks like a set from “Mad
Men,” with its clean lines, stone fireplace wall, and 1950s style furnishings.
The mid-century modern style of the houses in Holmes Run Acres – with lots of wood and glass – sets them apart from the traditional brick
split levels and ramblers that are so common in the Annandale/Mason area.

Since Lilly and Douglas Piner (above) moved into the house at 3419 Gallows Road, they expanded the size of the house from 800 to 1,300 square feet, rearranged the living spaces, and put in a new larger kitchen.
Several of those homes were open to the public Saturday as
part of the community’s annual Home and Garden Tour. While many residents have
expanded their homes and renovated the interior, they’ve maintained the original architectural
character as envisioned by the Luria Brothers, who built the first group of
homes in 1950. In fact, the Holmes Run Civic Association is so protective of
the community’s mid-century contemporary style, they got it listed on the National Register of Historic
Places in 2007.

Jeannette Chu and Keith Ketterer, owners of this Holmes Run Acres house, reoriented the interior spaces, put in new cork flooring, a new kitchen,  and new siding.

The Chu/Ketterer house is filled with Chinese antiques reflecting her heritage and the 13 years they spent in China. Holmes Run houses don’t have basements, so the owners have had to come up with innovative storage solutions. “We’ve had to learn to pare down,” Chu says.
The backyard of Kristin Robinson and Lindsey Powell’s house at 7817 Holmes Run Drive features a shady retreat under a pergola, a fire pit,  and an incredible array of curved flower beds.
Robinson and Powell knocked out walls, redid the kitchen and floors, and made many other improvements, but kept the original beamed ceiling.
Every inch of the exterior of 7710 Holmes Run Drive has been lovingly landscaped by owner Mary Alice Huybrechts.
Huybrechts accessorized her shady garden with ceramic stepping stones and ceramic leaves she made from real leaves. The sphere is a bowling ball covered with pieces of glass.
A Japanese garden complements Wilda Schrade’s home on 3309 Hemlock Drive.
The deck on Val Schrade’s house at 7629 Holmes Run Drive is full of flowers.

The upstairs living room of John and Sherri Brusca’s completely remodeled home offers a bird’s eye view of the trees on their front lawn.

  1. I work in people's homes and pass by many too, and it always impresses me how nice many places look, and the effort and design elements put into them! I can't ever imagine getting to live in some of these homes every day.

  2. Great post! I just had a minor correction, the Holmes Run Acres Home and Garden Tour takes place every other year as opposed to being an annual event. Thanks!
