International Night showcases global diversity at Stuart High School

Stuart students Shafaq Naz and Sara Younas from Pakistan.

Diverse cultures, talents, and cuisines were showcased at
JEB Stuart High School’s International Night Dec. 20. The event began with food from various
countries served by students, many of them wearing traditional outfits. There was injera with
a sauce made of chickpeas and tomatoes from Eritrea; empanadas from Guatemala;
coconut rice, eggrolls, and avocado smoothies from Vietnam; biryani and samosas from Pakistan; crepes from France;
chicken, rice, and cornbread from Bolivia; and much more.
Valeria Jimenez, a 10th grader from Bolivia, with her niece, Erika.
Everyone then moved into the auditorium
for a variety show featuring performances from around the world. There was a lively Korean K-Pop dance group, an
alluring dance by Sadia Marjan from Bangladesh, Egyptian belly dancing by
Naadiyah Burns and Fabiana Mendoza, Egyptian drumming, a Spanish folk dance by
Gaby Vieira, a Salvadoran song, Bolivian dancers, and representing the United States,
the school’s Hip Hop Dance Club.
Ruta Habtemariam serves coffee from Eritrea.
International Night was organized by Stuart’s chapter of
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). Money raised by the event will help
FBLA members attend leadership conferences, says the group’s president Steve
Wong, a senior who has received a scholarship to attend Virginia Tech.
