It’s registration time for the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics
If you’re going to hit the big 5-0 by Dec. 30, 2011, you can show off your skills by competing in the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics Sept. 17-28.
Dozens of events will take place throughout Northern Virginia, including several locations in the Annandale area: Tennis, racquetball, and softball hit and throw competitions will be held at Wakefield Park. The James Lee Community Center will host team line dancing, table tennis, and yo yo contests, and the Lincolnia Senior Center is the spot for eight-ball pool and scrabble.
So you can see, it’s not all athletics: There are bunco, and duplicate bridge, chess, backgammon, scrabble, and cribbage competitions, as well as more physical sports, such as swimming, diving, track and field, cycling, volleyball, bocce, miniature golf, Wii golf, Wii bowling, regular bowling, fencing, basketball free throw, horseshoes, badminton, and pickleball (doubles and singles).
The opening day, Sept. 17, features a welcome ceremony, a free health fair, and indoor track events at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center in Arlington.
Field events, Sept. 24 at Wakefield High School in Arlington, include javelin throw, Frisbee throw, shot put, discus, and running and standing long jump.
Participants register under their age group; there’s even a category for 100 or older. Some events have separate competitions for men and women, and some events are team-based. Winners will be awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals after each event.
The registration fee is $10 per participant plus $1 for each event. Some sports have additional charges. The deadline to register is Sept. 1. You can find registration information at senior centers, community centers, or senior residences; register online; or call 703/228-4721.
The Northern Virginia Senior Olympics is sponsored by the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, and Falls Church and the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, and Prince William. Competitors must live in one of those jurisdictions.
