Firefighting units from Jefferson Fire Station 18 began moving to temporary quarters at 6637 South Street in Falls Church Jan. 24, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department reports. The relocation is necessary to allow the existing fire station to be demolish and replaced with a new building.

The Jefferson Fire Station, at Woodley Lane and Hodge Place next to Route 50, was built in 1953 and is too small to accommodate newer, larger fire trucks. The new two-story building, expected to be completed in fall 2019, will be more than 3,000 square feet bigger. The project is slated to cost about $7.5 million, with funding from a 2012 bond referendum.

While packing up the furniture and equipment, the movers found a surprise behind a bulletin board: the names of firefighters written on the wall and dated Jan. 4, 1986.
