Justice HS overdose victim identified

Madeline Valeria Moran Centeno

The Justice High School student who died of a fentanyl overdose on Dec. 3 has been identified as 10th-grader Madeline Valeria Moran Centeno.

PTSA President Kim Lanoue has reached out to her mother, Rachel. “Understandably, she is reeling, but hopes at some point to be able to share with us more about her precious child. On behalf of our community, the PTSA is working with Rachel to find the best ways to support her and her daughters.”

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support the family. “She was so full of life and had such a special heart,” the GoFundMe page states. “Madeline always filled our house with laughter. Her hugs gave you comfort and love. Her smile melted our souls, and with her eyes, she stole our hearts.”

Madeline, age 15, is the latest victim in a growing fentanyl crisis affecting the region.

Police report she was video chatting with a friend at an apartment in Seven Corners when she became unresponsive. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

“Our hearts are breaking for our fellow Justice High School family, students, and staff – who have lost a child, a friend, and a pupil,” Lanoue wrote in an email to the community. “Our hearts are breaking at the loss of the great potential of a young girl and the permanently impacted the lives of her sisters, also students at Justice and Glasgow.”

The PTSA plans to “bring together students, families, and subject-matter experts in a manner that we hope will produce safe, honest, factual, and fruitful conversations that will result in greater understanding of the current state of our community and the development of impactful and implementable solutions.”

Justice Principal Tiffany Narcisse, meanwhile, has been widely criticized for posting a smiling selfie on Twitter that seemed to indicate the tragedy was all about her. The tweet said: “Losing a student is never easy for a building principal. Still smiling. Still standing. Still leading. Still teaching, learning, and growing.”

She subsequently posted on X: “Hi everyone. The previous tweet has been deleted. I apologize if anyone was offended. Thanks to everyone for the feedback.”

    1. As a parent of a student that goes to “Justice” the current principal “Tiff” hasn’t done anything to help the school in a positive way. Proof positive – her social media comment – it’s all about her. She needs to step down and the school board should encourage her to do so if not outright remove her.

While Madeline should have known better than to do drugs, condolences need to go the family. Her passing should be a learning experience to her friends and peers on the dangers of such drugs.

    2. I saw that post. It was all about herself… So bad. My condolences to the students family and to the Justice community.

      1. I agree this is sad news for everyone!! They are human beings, not judging can anyone suffer from this kind of circumstance!! Condolence to her family

  1. Bub – where does it say that this child was intentionally doing drugs? Maybe she did and maybe she didn’t, but everyone needs to be cautious: an amount the size of three grains of sand can be lethal. It behooves us all to be trained in Narcan – naloxone administration for all those who are victims of this insidious poison.

    1. Where is the word “intentionally” used in my post? Let’s get real here…. using any drug improperly is dangerous, including using prescribed and over the counter medication. Why would anyone take something that is suspect?

      1. I interpreted your it was her choice to do drugs as something she did with intention. I agree with you that all drugs, including alcohol, can be dangerous. My point was that some overdoses are a result of malicious intent. It can be difficult to determine what is suspect and what is not these days.

      1. Well there’s not much to say about the student, unfortunately. Is there? And there’s nothing to be done. However, plenty to say and do re the principal.

  2. This is a tragedy because young humans have passed away it doesn’t matter the circumstances we need to pay more attention to what is our kids doing

  3. So sorry to hear this, prayers go out to all families and friends!!!🙏 Need to know and understand that things aren’t what they used to be… Best if ya just don’t try, don’t let peer pressure get to you, Think Smart!!! Trust NoOne,or Nothing, even salt looks like sugar,,!!!🤔

  4. Y’all seriously want her to resign over a post she made on Twitter? All she needs to do is apologize and show everyone that’s not her character/change. Why do people go straight for the torches and pitchforks nowadays?

Anyway condolences to the family and RIP Madeline Valeria Moran Centeno

    1. Being a principal of a school is a massive responsibility, and children’s’ lives are at stake. That ‘one post’ demonstrated such a lack of judgment, character, empathy, and frankly, breach of fiduciary duty, that, yes, resignation is warranted. It was so egregious that Reddit strings with thousands of comments condemning her can be found with a quick google search.

The fact that she has not resigned is further evidence of her lack of judgment, character, empathy, and understanding of her fiduciary duty.

She has no shame, because it’s all about her. The worst possible personality trait for a principal to have with the exception of something that could put her in prison.

In my humble opinion, she never should have had the position in the first place.

  5. WOW! WAY TO MAKE THIS ALL ABOUT HERSELF! Not ONE WORD of sympathy to the family or concern for her students. Basically, her post says “I had a student die, but look at ME! I’m smiling! I’m going to be just fine!ME, ME, ME ,ME, ME!!!” Those poor parents! Can you just IMAGINE losing your 15 year old child and seeing that post? If her level of maturity is below her students’, and her only focus is HERSELF, she has no right to be in that position. What a TERRIBLE role model!!!
