House fire claims the lives of a young girl and her grandmother
[Updated Sept. 9.] A 9-year-old girl and her grandmother have died as a result of a fire at a single-family home in the 6600 block of Barrett Road in the Bel Air neighborhood in the Falls Church area of Mason District.
The fire started shortly after 1:40 a.m. on Sept. 6, the Fairfax County Fire Department reports. The first units on the scene observed heavy fire coming from the back of the two-story home.
News reports identified the girl as Kaysie Arancibia, a fourth-grader at Sleepy Hollow Elementary School. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
Another occupant was hospitalized in critical condition but later died. She was identified as Patricia Stoderl, 67, of Falls Church. A dog also died in the fire.
Kaysie’s mother, Crystal Stoderl, also lived at the house but wasn’t home at the time of the fire.
A GoFundMe page set up by a family friend describes Kaysie as an “energetic, funny, smart little girl who passed away way too soon” and calls Patricia, known as Tricia, “a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who always put others’ needs before her own.”
The GoFundMe campaign has so far raised over $8,000.
As is standard procedure, the cause of death for both occupants is pending an autopsy and toxicology report from the medical examiner.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Damages are estimated at about $198,500.
A neighbor discovered the fire and called 911. There were no working smoke alarms in the house.
According to a report by Fox5, firefighters had trouble getting inside the home because of clutter due to hoarding conditions.
Thank you for following up on this. This has been very sad for the Sleepy Hollow community. Kaysie was well known and a very energetic, social, and bright soul. She is missed.
