Kabob restaurant opens in Annandale
Annandale just got a new casual dining spot: Moby Dick House of Kabob opened Oct. 15 at 7042 Little River Turnpike.
The menu features Persian/Middle Eastern items, such as chicken kabobs, ground beef kabobs, gyros, falafel, baklava, and more. Kabobs come with basmati rice, in pita bread wraps, or on salads.
There are specials for every day of the week. On Wednesdays, for example, it’s khoresh gheimeh, a stew made from yellow peas, beef, onions, tomato sauce, and spices and served with steamed rice.
The Annandale location is the first Moby Dick with a mini market, says manager Maria Hernandez. It’s stocked with take-home items, such as bottles of a homemade yogurt drink called doogh, nuts, dates, toasted sunflower seeds, bottles of tahini dressing, and saffron ice cream.
The restaurant chain grew out of a diner opened by Mike Daryoush and a partner in 1987 in Bethesda. It grew more popular after they added a clay oven and switched to a Persian menu in 1989.
Daryoush, who is from Iran, renamed the restaurant Moby Dick House of Kabob after a popular kabob place in Tehran called Moby Dick.
There are now more than a dozen locations in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, including Falls Church, Springfield, and Fairfax.
A portrait of Daryoush, who died in 2019, hangs in the Annandale restaurant.
This is a great addition to the area. There are better Kabob places, but Moby’s is consistently good.
Thanks for this review Jake. What are the better Kabob places, in your opinion? I would like to try them all, especially Moby!
Right across the street at Food Korner. Love those guys
Looks like this is where the old Wendy’s restaurant used to be in the old K-Mart parking lot. Glad it’s being put to good use.
Glad this one has opened but the manager is incorrect. The Clarendon Moby’s has a little market and it’s been open for years. This location is not the first one.
very cute mural, love the Moby tail!
There are too many kebob places in our surrounding area. It won’t last
