The Lacey School: It’s really happening

If you’re curious about what the new elementary school in the Broyhill Crest neighborhood will look like, see the photo of the brand-new Laurel Hill school in Lorton. The new Annandale school on the Lacey site, scheduled to open for the start of the 2012 school year, will have a similar design as the Laurel Hill and Eagle View in Fairfax.

The Fairfax County school employees who now work at the Lacey Center will all be moved out by June 2010, and construction of the new school on that site will begin in late summer or early fall. The new school will have several “green” elements, including geothermal heating and cooling. It will serve about 900 students, which might change depending on what types of special services will be offered.

FCPS plans to start the comprehensive planning process in early 2010 to gather community input. Research on the attendance area would probably begin in early 2011. There is likely to be some need for street widening and sidewalk improvements in the immediate area. And since the Lacey Center is used as a polling place, an alternative needs to be identified. 1. Any idea if the County is considering a safety plan for Wayne Drive/Gallows Road? It can be quite treacherous turning from Wayne onto Gallows, particularly trying to make a left turn.
