Lake Accotink lakebed to be exposed during dam study

The dam at Lake Accotink.

The Fairfax County Park Authority plans to begin an assessment of the dam structure at Lake Accotink in mid-September.

To carry out the study, the water level in the lake will be lowered by up to five feet, which is expected to expose the muddy lakebed in many areas.

The Park Authority will post signs warning people to keep off the exposed lakebed to avoid getting stuck in the mud.

The evaluation of the dam is expected to be completed by Thanksgiving. It could take up to two months for the lake to return to normal levels, depending on precipitation.

  1. Why couldn’t the dam be inspected by a remote controlled camera? Won’t the lowering upset the eco system? Will this project include the removal of dead matter and tree branches. This may also include the removal of the surface algae. If the wall of the dam needs cleaning what chemicals will be used?

It’s going to take more than signs to keep some morons from walking out there. Maybe the signs should read, “First rescue $200″ Each additional rescue, add $250”
