Connolly calls the annual event, held for the first time at the Ernst Center on the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College, “the holiest day of the year.” It’s also his biggest fundraiser.

In a straw poll for chair of the Board of Supervisors, Jeff McKay, currently the supervisor for the Lee District, came out on top with 57.5 percent of the vote. Alicia Plerhoples, a professor at Georgetown Law School, came in second with 29.4 percent, followed by Ryan McElveen, an at-large member of the school board (9.6 percent), and Tim Chapman, a Reston-based developer (3.5 percent).

Although that was the largest straw poll so far, a lot can happen before the Democratic primary on June 11.

There was also a straw poll for Democratic candidates for president. Former Vice President Joe Biden came in first, followed by Sen. Kamala Harris of California and former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke.
