Lidl grocery store coming to Pinecrest Plaza

A Lidl store on Sudley Manor Drive in Manassas.

A Lidl
grocery store is expected to open next year in Pinecrest Plaza in the space
formerly occupied by Staples.
Neither the
Lidl company nor the Edens real estate company, which owns the retail center at
6548 Little River Turnpike, have responded to requests for confirmation.
However, the Edens website shows Lidl on the map of Pinecrest Plaza and states Lidl will open in the 23,487-square-foot space in summer 2020.

Pinecrest Plaza had previously pursued permits from Fairfax County for an Earth Fare supermarket in that spot.

Lidl is a
discount supermarket chain based in Germany with more than 10,500 stores in Europe
and the United States. It has a no-frills, minimal staff concept similar to
Aldi. However, unlike Aldi, shoppers don’t need quarters to access a shopping cart.
Lidl has an
express store connected with its U.S. headquarters in Crystal City. There are
Lidl stores in Ashburn, Manassas, Woodbridge, and Dumfries. There’s one under
construction on the corner of Commerce Street and Brandon Avenue in Springfield,
and another Lidl is planned for Chantilly.

  1. Didn't Earth Fare also have Pinecrest Plaza on the map? Isn't this misleading to say they're coming when it's not 100%?

  2. While EF would be nice…I’d rather have a business that actually comes than this depressing vacant storefront for years on end.

  3. Very disappointing that our grocery stores are all being replaced by Aldis, Lidls, and the like. The only discount/small format grocery store that I can stomach is Trader Joes.

    1. We need Earth Fare. They have a store in Fairfax that I travel to once a month. There is nothing in Mason like that. Thank goodness we have Harris Teeter! Because of the lower per capita income in this area that has steadily declined as a result of the Middle Class fleeing from homeless shelters, illegal trafficking, crime, poor school performance an overall decay of properties; a more upscale grocer would be afraid to take the risk of opening at Pinecrest. They do their homework before signing a lease.

The irony here is that there use to be a Wholefoods at Pinecrest for many years. Thanks to our wonderful supervisor and a decline in the area, this grocer went to greener pastures in Old Town. That is when I should have bailed from Mason. I thought Penny would bring Mason back online and not sink it. Boy was my judgement off.

It is pitiful that I have to drive to Old Town to patronize a Wholefoods and Fairfax to go to a Wegmans when we have all these vacant big box stores in Mason. And what does Penny build a huge homeless shelter and now a park for them to loiter.

    2. Very sad indeed, time for Penny to retire. We moved to Mason 10 years ago hoping that the good effects we were seeing in Alexandria, Arlington and Shirlington would spread here. Instead, the progress seems to have jumped right over us and moved to the Mosaid district and even Falls Church City. Our house value has not appreciated in 10 years.I so regret buying a house here but we are stuck for now.

    3. You all are drunk, our houses have appreciated considerably in 10 years. Do you not even look at comps in your neighborhood?

    4. Yeah I wonder if someone is just trolling with these comments, someone keeps mentioning these same homeless shelters and no housing appreciation when they have gone up each year 3-7% steadily. It's probably all the same person. Not that Annandale is perfect, but it's in Fairfax County, one of the highest taxed areas, it's certainly not "poverty."

    5. Right. Makes me think these people haven’t gotten out much to see what a real dump is. Such a shame to have such a pessimistic worldview where people literally think that about Mason. Must be exhausting

    6. You better watch out before someone drops a homeless shelter on you and your pretty little dog too!

    7. I don't think it's trolls and I don't think houses appreciate uniformly. You're lucky if you have seen that much appreciation. We bought in 2009, and have not seen this 3-7% yearly appreciation that someone above notes. We probably have seen 7% appreciation total over the past decade in our Lake Barcroft home. We're on the lake, but a couple of blocks off it, so maybe that has something to do with it, but it could also be the higher crime we have seen these past few years (crime from Culmore does unfortunately spill into LB), we have had several incidents since we moved here, including one time a rash of car robberies where you could literally trace the cars robbed on a map and see which way the culprit(s) was going. I don't think anyone is saying Mason is a dump, but I think that more could be done to make this area more attractive to businesses.

    8. Sure, I'd agree to that. I'm no real estate expert but I'd guess it's because Barcroft was relatively insular from the housing market bust back then due to the uniqueness of the neighborhood and proximity to arlington/DC. You could see similar performance from houses in Arlington and Alexandria. Properties further out depreciated far more, and thus have more to grow in the years that follow. Still, 7% appreciation over 10 years? that's like what 500-535k? I struggle to believe that considering a brief tour on redfin shows me 17% over 6 years (3418 rustic) 183% over 19 years (6141 beachway), 28% over 7 years (6605 dearborn). Are you saying your real estate assessment only grew 7% in 10 years?

    9. It is funny that someone can only stomach Trader Joes, but they must not know that Aldi purchased Trader Joe's in 1973.

  4. I am not a fan of Penny by any stretch and agree she has done awful things for Mason and yet we still have her (yes, I vote, and yes I vote against her). But where do you live in Mason that your house has not appreciated in ten years??? I know that ours has appreciated a tremendous amount in that time.

  5. So is Lidl coming or not coming? The article says yes, but the comments make it sound like it may not be the case. Any updates?

  6. When whole foods was at pinecrest, they started to ask for your zip code when paying …. they must have figured the customer base was coming from outside 22003, so moved. Don't think we can blame penny for that, just corporate capitalism. Also, it was a fantastic fresh fields store for years before WF bought them out.

  7. I asked whole foods why they left Pinecrest. They acknowledged that Pinecrest was actually one of the stores with the highest use and sales, but the space was too small. If you were around here back then, there were no other vacant spaces in the area. Now there is the k-mart space and Landmark Mall.

  8. The new Giant at landmark is definitely a nice upgrade, not sure if a lidl is really the answer for that area, not much for variety at all
