Living large in Annandale

The average house in Annandale is valued at under $400,000, but for homebuyers with a lot more money to spend, there are pricier options.

There’s a huge house on the market at 3809 Hummer Road, for example, with an asking price of $1.175 million, reduced from $1.25 million. It comes with a guest house that is bigger than the average Annandale home.

The house has seven bedrooms, five full bathrooms plus two half baths, a two-story living room, huge kitchen with a commercial-size refrigerator, dining room plus a breakfast room, sun room, laundry room, and three-car garage.

One of the best features is a suspended walkway overlooking the living room and entrance foyer and connecting the upstairs bedrooms. There are several giant closets that are bigger than some bedrooms in the typical Annandale house. The lower level has a media room prewired for speakers and electronics and a tiered floor for theater seating. There’s also a rec room with a fireplace, wet bar, and refrigerator. The lot is eight-tenths of an acre. It has a fenced backyard, but lacks a deck or patio.

The guest house has three bedrooms, two full baths, a laundry room, living room, den, and small kitchen. It could be used as a home office; a home for the owners’ parents, nanny, or housekeeper; or rental unit. An enclosed walkway connects the guest house to the garage in the main house.

The house was custom built in 2008, and the original owners only lived in it for about eight to 10 months before the Bay National Bank foreclosed on it, said Ginger King of Prudential Realtors. That bank subsequently went under, and the house is now owned by Bay Bank of Maryland. The bank put $100,000 into the house, King said. The Brazilian cherry wood floors were refinished, and there are new light fixtures and appliances.

The house was put on the market in June, and was soon put under contract. But the deal fell through when the couple who planned to purchase it decided to divorce three days before the settlement.
