Man arrested for eluding police in stolen vehicle

Guzman [FCPD]

An attempted traffic stop for speeding at around 1:20 a.m. on Nov. 5 in Falls Church led to the arrest of Jose Fuentes Guzman of Fairfax for possession of a stolen vehicle, “felony speed to elude,” and driving without a license, the Fairfax County Police Department reports.

An officer with the Mason District police station observed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed through a residential neighborhood near Jaguar Trail and Arlington Boulevard with license plates registered to a different car.

When he attempted to get the vehicle to stop, the driver kept going. The vehicle crashed a short distance later near Fairview Park Drive, and the two occupants attempted to run from officers.

Neither was injured and both were taken into custody. There were no injuries. The passenger was not charged.

On Nov. 2, Kristian Portillo, 18, was arrested and charged with attempted carjacking. Portillo had entered an occupied car around 6:35 p.m. in Annandale. After the victim drove a short distance, the suspect got out and ran away but was captured by officers from the West Springfield police station at Commons Drive/Rectory Lane.

The FCPD is joining with other law enforcement agencies across the region in the “Street Smart” campaign, which aims to prevent accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists. Police officers are stepping up enforcement actions and handing out safety literature with the goal of reducing deaths and injuries.
