Man shot in Bailey’s Crossroads

A 21-year-old man was shot on Monday night at the 6000 block
of Vista Drive in Bailey’s Crossroads, the Fairfax County Police Department
reports.
The FCPD received a call at about 9:50 p.m. about a fight
and gunshots in the area, says FCPD spokesperson Tawny Wright.

They found the victim with
wounds to the upper body. He was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital where his
condition was described as non-life-threatening.

There were conflicting reports about whether he was by
himself or with others. Witnesses told the police there was a fight that
escalated, resulting in the victim being shot. A group of men were involved,
but police don’t know how many.
Another victim on the scene had been hurt with a baseball
bat but refused medical treatment. The police don’t have any information on
him.
Detectives haven’t been able to talk to the gunshot victim
yet, and there is no description of the suspects.

In other weekend crime news, a man walking alone on Glen Carlyn Drive at Vista Drive at 3:40 a.m. on Jan. 15 was the victim of armed robbery. A man jumped out from behind a tree, tripped the victim, displayed a knife, and took an undisclosed amount of cash. The victim did not require medical attention.

The suspect ran away toward Vista Drive. He was described as Hispanic, in his mid-20s, around 5 feet 7 inches tall, and about 180 pounds. He was clean-shaven, had a gold tooth, and was wearing a dark, hooded sweatshirt.

Anyone with information about either of those attacks is asked to call the police, 703-691-2131, or Crime Solvers, 866-411-TIPS/8477.

On Jan. 14, a man was arrested for assaulting a law enforcement officer a little after 8 p.m. on the 6200 block of Little River Turnpike near Landmark Plaza.

FCPD officers had arranged to meet officers from the City of Alexandria Police Department to exchange a person in custody who was wanted in Fairfax County. During the exchange, the prisoner began to assault an FCPD officer. After a brief struggle, the police were able to gain compliance.

Mateo Amaya, 22, of Woodbridge, was taken to the Adult Detention Center in Fairfax, where his outstanding warrants were served. He was charged with two counts of assault on law enforcement and obstruction of justice.

  1. Interestingly enough, Penny did just that last weekend. Invites were sent out to HOA and civic association presidents to meet the police captains that serve our district and ask questions, etc. The meeting was well attended.

    1. Considering that the majority of homes in Mason are not HOA's or Civic Associations, that leaves a lot of residents NOT informed and are without the opportunity that a few select groups were given. Since everyone in Mason gets a request to donate to her campaigns, it's certain that the addresses of all constituents are on file, and they could have been made aware of the event.

    2. so, your expectation is that she send official correspondence to everyone in the district to notify them of a meet and greet with the police captains? That's ridiculous. Notice was sent out to the leaders of the citizens associations, as well as the Mason District Council, who then propagated the information to their constituents.

Also, "not having a civic association" is a silly excuse. If you don't have a civic association, MAKE ONE! Mason District Council has the information on their site. https://sites.google.com/site/masondistrictcouncil/how-to-start-a-civic-association

If all you do is complain but aren't contributing to a solution, then you are part of the problem.

    3. Two shootings in recent days in Mason District: One into a Daycare Center and this one close to two schools: Bailey's and JEB Stuart. This is bad.

    4. No, it isn't ridiculous. I have long slammed penny gross' office for only paying attention to people whose homes are part of HOAs and "Civic Associations". I should not have to be part of a club up have access to my elected official. I pay my taxes. I am a resident.

The Mason District Council emails only reach me sporadically.

  2. yes why aren't normal citizens invited or known about these? was the blog invited to cover? crime effects everyone. what happened at this meeting? what is being done?

  3. she could post about meetings on social media and get word out to people that don't have community associations, not that hard. she doesn't want people to come out. that simple.

  4. I would like to understand the "progressive viewpoint" on reducing the crime rate in Mason District, which appears based on reporting in the Annandale Blog to be rapidly increasing.

Do we need to push for stricter gun-control laws in Virginia to reduce the increase in shootings in Mason District? Do we need the Fairfax Country Police Department to increase police patrols in Culmore in the evening and early morning hours, when and where most of the recently reported crimes appear to have taken place?

Whining about whether Supervior Gross spent a great deal of money to inform all of Mason District's residents to a meeting the vast majority of whom could not or would not attend is beside the point and counterproductive.

The vast majority of the residents of Culmore are individuals who do not commit violent crimes, and the government of Fairfax County has a responsibility to ensure these individuals, and all the residents of Mason District, feel safe from violent crime when they go outside from their homes any time of day or night.

  5. If you only read this blog you might think Mason District is a hotbed of crimes. In fact, there are crimes all over the county. According to the most up-to-date statistics online, in 2015 there were fewer crimes in the Mason Police District (which is not quite contiguous with the Mason supervisory district) than in the Mt. Vernon, McLean, and Franconia police districts. There were more crimes in Mason in 2015 than 2014 but much fewer than in 2013.

Anyone who wants to learn more about crime in the community and police issues can come to the Mason Police District’s Citizen Advisory Committee meeting on the first Tuesday of the month, 7 p.m., at the Mason Government Center. The next one is Feb. 7.

    1. Of course crime exists throughout the county. The concern is the nature of the crimes in Mason District. Too many murders, homicides, and shootings.

    2. Sorry, Ellie–don't confuse the trolls with statistics. They're going to believe what they choose to believe. They're very smart–they have very big brains. And they use all the best words. (Not appropriately, but they use them. "libido"? Concern that there are too many "murders"–and too many "homicides", too.)

  6. Enforce the housing laws that this County has in Culmore and other neighborhooods and crime will be reduced. You have 20 people living in a 2 bedroom apartment and this is exactly what you are going to get. When you have children living in closets and dresser drawers as bed this is what you are going to get. When you have a family of 6 living in one bedroom this is what you are going to get. When you have strangers renting a "spot" in an apartment or house by the night this is what you are going to get. There is a solution Penny wants nothing to do with it.

    1. Although I think the County has tried to keep its citizens informed and protected, they have not dealt with the fundamental problems. Garbage begets more garbage and that is the Culmore affect. Get rid of Culmore, improve mass transit options so that a better demographics moves in, help grow the local economy through tax incentives, public/private partnerships, better enforcement of Code compliance over the County attorney (they probably live in Mclean) driven anemic enforcement guidelines and things would improve. Get some of the folks in Arlington to give the leadership in FFX a crash course in urban and economic development. These problems have to be addressed holistically, the County band aid solutions are not working.

The current leadership has no experience in urban environments. They should be made to live in NYC or DC for a year to understand the challenges and evaluate solutions so that they can be better prepared to address our current problems.

  7. Housing code enforcement is a critical element in crime control and Mason District is the go to place for illegals in FFX. MS 13 activities are on the rise.

My understanding is that Mason District had the highest murder rate in FFX in 2015. Penny didn't deny that at the League of Women Voters election debate.

    1. Trump is coming to town and will help clean up the criminal illegal aliens. Maybe we will blessed with a cleaner Mason District after this.

    2. "Trump is coming to town and will help clean up the criminal illegal aliens. Maybe we will blessed with a cleaner Mason District after this." Agreed!! Clean up this liberal mess we have here.

    3. How, by building a stupid wall at the Mexican border? Yeah, that's really going to clean up Mason District. Trump lives in a golden tower; he needs to talk to people who actually reside among immigrants, and not just ultra-wealthy ones.

He just wants his name on a stupid wall.

    4. Trump plans on deporting crimimal illegal aliens. That is much more than Penny Gross does. I for one am proud that he is going to build a wall as well. We need it.

    1. You are blind, deaf, and dumb if you think that Culmore residents are not mostly of Hispanic descent.

Surrounding Culmore? Like Lake Barcroft? That's a different story.

    2. Its not a hispanic issue, its that there is a high concentration of poor, illegals and gangs living in those buildings that may happen to be hispanic. And that is why Culmore has to go, clearly a concept beyond Anon 10:58's and Gross's ability to grasp as a problem of urban decay and the spin off that results from ghettoizing a demographic or an economic underclass.
