Manager needed for Wakefield Farmers Market

The Wakefield Farmers Market

Winter hasn’t even officially started yet, but the Fairfax County farmers markets are already getting ready for the 2020 season

The county needs to find a new market manager for the Wakefield Farmers Market and is also seeking new vendors for all of its markets.

The market manager position is voluntary. The primary duties are opening and closing the market and serving as the face of the farmers market program to customers and vendors.

The market manager helps promote the market, answers customer questions, monitors safety, and helps resolve minor issues or report incidents. Volunteers should be outgoing, passionate about buying local, and enthusiastic about connecting community members with local farmers and producers. Applicants must agree to a three-month to one-year commitment.

The Wakefield market is open Wednesdays, 2-6 p.m., May-October, in Wakefield Park in Annandale.

For more information about the market manager opportunity, contact Hala Elbarmil, marketing and outreach coordinator for Fairfax County farmers markets, [email protected].

The farmers market program is also seeking vendors for the 2020 season for its 10 markets across the county. The markets are strictly producer-only, meaning all farmers and producers may only sell what they raise on their farms or make from scratch. Vendors must be based within a 125-mile radius of Fairfax County.

Interested vendors should contact Julia Duepree, [email protected], 703-642-0128.

  1. Why is the market manager a volunteer? Does a supermarket make its store manager positions unpaid/volunteer? The shoppers at these farmers' markets are no doubt passionate about the local connection; the farmers, too. Yet shoppers need to earn money to buy the produce, and farmers need to earn money to grow and bring the produce to market. The market is not a charity. A small percentage of earnings would easily support a market manager, who should be paid.

  2. Fairfax County relies on Volunteers as an unpaid workforce. Many of us work countless hours for no pay. The system here truly takes advantage of people and this is just another example of that. Unfortunately, democracy is not a spectator sport so this is one way to get involved to try to make the system better.
