The Fairfax County Park Authority expects to begin refurbishing the tennis courts at Mason District Park on June 12.

The project will include the replacement of old asphalt surfacing, fencing, gates, net posts, and footers. The courts will get a new seal coat, color coat, and playing lines.

Mason District Park will remain open, but the work might temporarily affect some other areas of the park. Weather pending, the tennis court project should be completed in the fall.

In a separate effort, the Park Authority has begun the process of identifying an optimal location at Mason District Park for two dedicated pickleball courts. Those courts would replace the ones in Kendale Woods Park in the Broyhill Crest neighborhood.

The Park Authority’s announcement to close those courts has sparked strong opposition from neighborhood pickleball players.

  1. Good they are keeping them for tennis. Houses back up to the courts near the parking lot so they are not suitable for pickleball. Locals fondly refer to the courts as the Korean Country Club.

  2. No!!! To pickleball in Mason District Park. There are 100 acres of quiet forested land that would suddenly lose all semblance of tranquility. Anyone living near that park knows how well sound travels from the playing fields and amphitheater. Neighbors did not buy their homes to be later attacked by the constant annoyance of pickleball noise. Pickleball should be built indoors at the Rec Centers. Not in our district parks.

    1. Neighbors bought their house next to a park maintained by the county. The county determined that its residents had a desire and need for a new feature that will be put on county land. Sucks to suck but if you want to ensure you have something in perpetuity you have to buy everything.

  3. I find it amazing that people that live next to parks expect them to be quiet. If you want quiet move to the Shenandoah where the deer and bear roam and there’s not a pickle ball in sight.

    1. They move next to a park knowing the noise level that exists at the time. You (maybe not you, but others) can’t blame them for opposing additional noise-generating activities. I had not thought about it, but unoccupied western Virginia would make an excellent location for new pickleball courts.

      1. Right, because when you buy a house next to a park you get to decide from that day forward how the park is used.

It’s would be a comical view if it wasn’t so damaging to the community. Unless someone sneakily sold a house next to a park and didn’t tell the buyer the park was there, or the buyer was otherwise hoodwinked, then the problem is with the realtor and a blind buyer.

People using the park are being driven away for using the park. It’s that simple and it’s insane.

  4. I am so excited that Mason District Tennis Courts are getting a much-needed facelift. The Justice HS tennis team uses Mason District for both practices and games. They are in terrible shape and have actually impacted some of the matches (balls going wonky with divets, etc.).

  5. The noise from pickleball is horrible an so annoying to the residents nearby. All residents, including those who live near the park, deserve to have their quite space.
