Mason police launch DWI offensive

One of the key priorities of Capt. Gun Lee, commander of the Mason District Police Station, is minimizing the problems caused by drinking. He has directed his officers to crack down on people driving while intoxicated and will enforce the code banning public drunkenness, beginning with a major offensive this weekend.

As part of this effort, police will set up a DWI checkpoint Saturday night in the Mason District.

“It’s a matter of public safety,” Lee says. But it’s not just about protecting people in vehicles. He says intoxicated people are often involved in pedestrian accidents and become victims of robberies and other crimes because they’re unable to defend themselves.

Police will also target “chronic offenders who have been arrested numerous times for public intoxication,” Lee says. He would like to get these people off the streets and into treatment programs.

“You will see a lot of officers out there this weekend,” he says.
