Merrifield redevelopment project to open in October 2012
A key element of the project will be the Angelika Film Center, with eight movie screens. This chain, which originated in New York City’s SOHO area, offers a heavy dose of independent and art movies, along with more mainstream fare.
It will have over 600,000 square feet of retail, 75,000 square feet of office space, 1,000 multifamily residential units, about 114 townhomes, a 150-room Hotel Sierra, 4,000 parking spaces, and a couple of urban parks which will serve as gathering and performance spaces.
Retail and dining establishments already lined up include Target, MOM’s Organic Market, Black’s Restaurant, Taylor Gourmet, Matchbox Restaurant, Cava Mezze Grill, Cyclone Anaya’s (a Mexican restaurant from Texas), and Red ApronButchery.
The project includes new traffic patterns. A new District Avenue will be parallel to Gallows Road. Eskridge Road will connect to Lee Highway and later will extend from Route 50 to the Dunn Loring Metro station.
Edens and Avant is working with Avalon Bay on the multifamily housing units, and it hasn’t been determined yet whether they will be condos or apartments. EYA is developing what Hibler calls “luxury urban townhomes.” The office space hasn’t been leased yet.
