Metro is closing 17 more stations

Metro is closing 17 stations indefinitely, including the East Falls Church station, effective March 26.

The closures are being done because of low ridership during the coronavirus emergency and “to conserve critical resources and protect the health and safety of Metro employees and the public,” the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s Pandemic Task Force announced March 24.

Metro had already closed the Smithsonian and Arlington Cemetery stations and urges people to use Metro for essential trips only. Ridership is down 90 percent.

Metro is getting low on cleaning supplies, such as hospital-grade disinfectant, wipes, and hand sanitizer, and “is taking action to make its current two to three-week warehouse supply stretch until massive orders placed in late January are received.”

In addition to the East Falls Church station, other stations in Virginia that will close include Clarendon, Virginia Square, Eisenhower, McLean, and Van Dorn. Seventy-two stations will remain open.

Metro is also closing some entrances at eight stations in D.C. plus the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport station.
