First lady Michelle Obama will be at Parklawn Elementary School, in the Annandale area, tomorrow at 11:15 a.m., along with celebrity chef Rachael Ray and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, to unveil new federal nutrition standards for school meals.
“Improving America’s school lunches is one of the five key pillars of Mrs. Obama’s childhood obesity campaign, which marks its second anniversary in February,” states the blog, Obama Foodarama. Ray will join the cafeteria staff to cook a school lunch that meets the new guidelines. Obama and Vilsack will speak to the school community, then will have lunch with students.
“The First Lady’s visit to Parklawn is designed to illustrate that many schools are already providing excellent school lunches for children, even before the new nutrition standard has become law,” states Obama Foodarama. “Parklawn has been recognized by USDA in the HealthierUs School Challenge, a program that rewards schools for best-practices in food and fitness initiatives.”
The nutrition standards are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act signed into law by President Obama in December 2010. The proposed USDA nutrition rule was issued in January 2011.
This is Michelle Obama’s second appearance in Annandale in the past three months. She spoke at Annandale High School in October.
Are we really thinking Fairfax County Public Schools lunches are healthy? They are not cooked on sight. It is reheated at the schools-at least for the elementary schools. FCPS uses wheat bread now. Oh and they changed the beef hot dogs to turkey hot dogs. Is that really what we are allowing them to call a healthy lunch?
They serve mostly canned fruit. Very little fresh fruit is served.
Healthy lunch? Healthier than before? "Maybe." But there is still a lot of processed food being servered to our children in FCPS.
Here's a typical week's lunch menu in FCPS:
Macaroni & Cheese, Chicken tenders, Hamburger or Grilled Cheese, Spaghetti, Pizza.
Healthy eating?
I'm not "buying" it!
