More than 50 National Night Out events held in Mason District

National Night Out in the Calloway community in Annandale.

Homeowner and civic associations, apartment complexes, and other community groups hosted neighborhood gatherings Aug 7 for National Night Out, many of them drawing representatives from local police and fire departments.

Among the guests at the National Night Out event at the Bailey’s Crossroads Community Shelter were, left to right: Jan-Michael Sacharko of New Hope Housing; Cassandra Babilya, a volunteer with K9 Caring Angels; Tormund, a therapy dog; B. Javkhlan of the Bailey’s Crossroads Volunteer Fire Station; Melanie Haake; and therapy dog Hot Cakes. The dogs help reduce stress among among shelter residents.

There were more than 50 potlucks, barbecues, and ice cream socials in Mason District. National Night Out promotes crime prevention by encouraging neighbors to get to know one another.
