Mosaic District is losing its farmers market
The market at Mosaic. |
Update, 3/29/19: FreshFarm will operate a farmers market at Mosaic.
The Mosaic Central Farm Market, after six years at the Mosaic District in Merrifield, is moving to George Marshall High School, 7731 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, in two weeks.
The new market, to be known as NOVA Central Farm Market, will operate on Sundays, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. There will be giveaways and freebies at the Grand Opening on April 7. Meanwhile, the Mosaic farmers market will be open for two more Sundays.
In a March 21 email to customers, Central Farm Market says, “we were told, with just a few weeks notice and for no reason, that we had to leave the [Mosaic] property. As you can imagine this has been a very difficult time for us and our vendors. In a matter of weeks, we had to find a new location, enroll vendors, and take care of all of the business matters associated with such an enormous move.”
Well that is kind of stupid. The pic shows it as a thriving marketplace.
I bet that was the issue — paying tennants getting peeved about the farmer's market getting in the way of their business. It is a really stupid decision, I bet the market drove a lot of traffic to the area.
Yeah, I bet it's a selling point for the apartments, and it drove people to the farmers market to know about the businesses that operate there everyday, as opposed to just the Farmers market that only operates on Sundays. Feel like it was a win win situation for everyone.
Very disappointing. The new location is not convenient for me. This market allowed me to explore Mosaic and make some discoveries. I won't go back there now.
I bet those businesses that complained will lose additional buyers because they are less likely to get that volume of foot traffic. Very shortsighted.
If Penny Gross had a vision and any smarts about her she would take advantage of this opportunity and turn her wasteful Penny Park on Columbia pike into a revenue generating open air farmers market open all week w parking in front of the old HH Greg. The County could charge fees for the market and employ the homeless instead of having these homeys sit around on the corners with their filthy wears and shopping carts. This would bring vitality to this very forgotten part of a commercial district that should be thriving as a destination. It would also give the homes a constructive beginnings out of their predicament.
The operative words here are "if she had a vision and any smarts"
Last night I rode my bike from Vienna to home and had to go through Baileys. The stark difference was jolting: trash all over the place, broken and dangerous sidewalks, homeys on the corner by the fake 7 Eleven. It really brought to view that we living in a depressed and blighted area, bordering what could be viewed as a slum by outsiders passing through or looking for a new home.
Are you talking about Mason district park?
No the new Penny Park where that office building was torn down next to Bradley Acura and the green area where the temp first station was located.
Correction: Temp Fire Station
There is a farmer's market on Thursdays at Mason District Park.
Litter is an American problem. I see letter EVERYPLACE. If you don't like it, get out and clean it up.
I do.
The litter must fly over Vienna to its destiny at the Dump in Baileys Crossroads. I find it interesting that the people in Vienna were not throwing water bottles and beer cans on the road on a very crowded pedestrian active day. They had manners and were using trash bins.
And by the way I do pick up litter when I see it, unfortunately Baileys Crossroads needs an army and dump trucks to pick up all the garbage that is being strewn all over the place. And the homeys squatting at the intersection where the fake 7 Eleven is just makes it worse.
There's a large area next to the Mosaic farmer's market that really looks like it was built for a grocery store (Harris Teeter, Whole Foods, whatever). If Mosaic is negotiating for someone to move in, asking the farmer's market to go is a pretty obvious move. Doesn't mean it wasn't handled really poorly, but that seems the mostly likely reason.
