Everyone who uses, enjoys, or lives near
Wakefield Park is invited to suggest a name for one of the park’s small streams
currently known as “Unnamed Tributary to Accotink Creek.”

The stream begins east of the beltway, runs
through a culvert at the entrance to Wakefield Park, flows west about 750 feet
over a fair-weather crossing in the Dominion Power right-of-way, and under a
Cross County Trail bridge before joining Accotink Creek.

regular mail by July 15 to the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District, 2055 Government
Center Parkway, Suite 905, Fairfax, VA 22035.

page—of why the name is being suggested. In case the county applies later to have the name formally recognized by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (for
use on federal maps and publications), some guidelines should be followed. For
example, if a commemorative name is proposed, the intended honoree must have
been deceased for at least five years.

the entries and select a name for the tributary.

A restoration project is also in the works
for this stream. Its bed and banks are eroding, sending sediment into Accotink Creek, so the segment inside the park will be graded, stabilized,
and planted. Also, a 100-foot riprapped culvert outfall will be replaced with a
shorter, more effective outfall, and the fair-weather crossing will be rebuilt.

The stream restoration project is being
undertaken as a partnership of the Fairfax County Park Authority, the Northern Virginia Soil and
Water Conservation District, Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, and Friends of Accotink Creek.

How about Dreadnaughts Draft after the semi-pro baseball team they say played in Annandale years ago? Or Mosby's Creek after the famous CSA soldier. Or Lee's Run as it runs to Fitzhugh's old estate near Wakefield Park where Lee spent time as a boy.
