New dining spots open in Bailey’s Crossroads

Two casual restaurants opened recently in Bailey’s Crossroads – a hot chicken place and a coffee/dessert shop.

The Red Bird replaces the Mount Olive Restaurant at 3405 Payne St.

The menu features spicy chicken sandwiches and tenders with a twist – all the meat is halal-certified. That means the animals are slaughtered in a particular manner that makes the meat acceptable for Muslims.

Diners can choose among six spice levels ranging from mild to “FKU CRA.” Other menu items include fries, cheese fries, mac and cheese, and toffee cake.

This is the third Red Bird location. The others are in Vienna and Reston.

Shaghf Café is located at 3400-B Washington Drive between the Jerusalem Mediterranean Restaurant and the Afandina Hookah Lounge.

It’s part of a chain based in Dubai; this is the first one in the D.C. region.

Shaghf offers several kinds of hot and cold coffee drinks, fruit drinks, croissants, cake, and other desserts.
