New elementary school proposed for Glasgow Middle School site

The Fairfax County Public Schools’ Capital Improvement Program (CIP)
for 2013-17 suggests the possibility of building a new elementary school on the Glasgow Middle School campus.
A new school is needed to relieve overcrowding in the
Bailey’s Crossroads area. Bailey’s Elementary School is at 130 percent of
capacity this year and is expected to be at 160 percent by 2017-18. Glen Forest Elementary is at capacity now but is expected to be at 128 percent in five
years.
locating a new elementary school there: It’s less than a mile from Parklawn Elementary School, which isn’t overcrowded. Residents have also complained that it would lead to increased traffic
congestion in the Parklawn community. Glasgow parents are concerned it would make it more difficult to
expand Glasgow, which has a growing enrollment. Glasgow is under capacity now
but is expected to be at 119 percent in five years.
The problem is the lack of available land in Bailey’s Crossroads for a new
school. Another site that has been considered, the Willston Multicultural Center in Seven Corners, doesn’t have strong support among the Fairfax County Board
of Supervisors, which owns the building. A proposal to add classroom space to
the renovation of the Wilson Library to relieve overcrowding at Bailey’s Elementary
School was rejected by Mason Supervisor Penny Gross.
out of solutions,” said school board member Sandy
Evans (Mason), who noted the library project was “a good idea.”
this month, calls for $848.5 million in construction, “capacity enhancements”
(modulars, for example), renovations, additions, and infrastructure projects. That
includes $317.3 million already funded by school bonds passed by voters. A
bond referendum on the 2013 ballot would provide funding for some of the
remaining projects.
14,000 since 2006-07. Another 11,000 students are expected to be added by
2016-17 for a total enrollment of 189,000.
or more over capacity in five years include Braddock (128 percent), Bren Mar
Park (171 percent), Columbia (138 percent), and Olde Creek (128 percent),
I would love to see the demographics of this overcrowing broken down because I suspect that the reason for it is that FX County has become a sanctuary for illegal aliens and their children. As a result legal, law abiding families living in this area are going to pay the price. None of these so-called solutions will fix what is wrong with this area. We need to oust those on the BOS who refuse to deal with the real issues here: illegal aliens and all of our tax money going to their support. And we wonder why the County has such a huge budget shortfall…
Public schools are required by law to provide an education to all children, regardless of status and are prohibited from asking a child's status.
Would you really prefer denying an education to children who didn't have a say in where their parents choose to live? How would having a bunch of uneducated, unemployable people make the community better?
By discouraging them from being here at all.
Enforce the Laws! That would solve the problem.
It is not the job of the County Board or the school board to enforce immigration laws. They have no enforcement capabilities at the local level nor the money to pay for any enforcement. Talk to your federal government about this issue.
I was talking about the Boarding House Laws. The Board of Supervisors and our County has every right to enforce this law. This will help with the overcrowding in our schools.
Thanks for the update! I'm thrilled to hear that the County might build a new ES at Glasgow MS. Of course, by the time that it would actually be built, my son will be in MS.
Maybe if we stopped giving them free services they would stop showing up. Out present system is equivalent to trying to get rid of an annoying guest by handing out more and more free stuff to them, then wondering why they keep staying. America needs to wake up and have some standards and say no, you want to break the law then we won't care about you. We do it with all the other criminals, which is what these people are.
Wow, calling children criminals…Merry Christmas! The future of a country depends on it's citizens being educated. You never know when you might need help from one of these future adults and it will benefit you if they are educated.
I tend to avoid Home Depot and 7-11 parking lots. Plus I dont eat fast food, minimal to no contact.
This is a great blog, it is a shame that one or two racist trolls have made the comments threads unreadable…
I would like to add that you should not easily use the word racist: Anonymous at 11 am on 12/27.
You do not know who you are speaking about and their background. Taxpayers are tired of their children being in severely overcrowded schools because the Federal and Local Governments are not enforcing the laws. Here in the county we have laws about "boarding" houses. Enforce them do not encourage them. The Federal Government has laws about immigration and once again they need to enforce them not encourage. Let me also add the illegals who are overcrowding our schools are not paying taxes but are receiving free food, free/ reduce housing, free health care, free education, free cell phones, free diapers & wipes, free school supplies and the list goes on and on. In the meantime families are every month living pay check to pay check and paying taxes to provide the same things to their families every month but none of it is free. In addition they are attending schools where their children are going to school in a trailer and if they need to use the bathroom they have to get permission to leave their class go to the school building ring the door bell wait to be buzzed in and then go to the bathroom. Did I mention these are elementary school age kids? For the kids to get to point A to point B they have to walk through trash because in foreign countries it is not a big deal just to throw your trash on the ground. Just some food for thought and if you have kids I hope you would take the time to think what your kid(s) are missing out of (clean school grounds, class room in a building, green space to play on, getting to play on the streets, small class sizes).
Amen. We are not racist who speak up about injsutices we see. Also – as a resident near Glasgow – I am in no way shape or form interested in having this in my neighborhood. We do not need the extra traffic – trash – etc and lack of field that this horrible idea would produce. NIMBY
At 5 acres, Willston would be the smallest elementary school lot in the County. Currently the public school operating on the smallest lot in the county is Mt. Eagle – which sits on 6 acres. Previously, it was the old Graham Road ES – The CIP incorrectly lists the new Graham Road school as being 4.66 acres – that is actually the lot size for the old Graham Road School. The new Graham Road school sits on approx 8 acres.
From the CIP – at the back, Glasgow sits on about 22 acres, Holmes sits on 28, and Poe sits on 25. Stuart sits on almost 21 yet Jefferson and Falls Church are just under 40. Annandale sits on 28.
Mason Crest sits on about 10 acres as does Columbia, Glen Forest, Belvedere, Sleepy Hollow and Parklawn. Bailey's and Beech Tree are just shy of 10 acres
I am really growing tired of the label racist being thrown around… please…. its getting old. This type of PC accusatory tone just adds to the problems. People are allowed to speak out against what they see is wrong. It doesn't make them a racist.
I am a legal immigrant. Not racist, I believe the gov is in part quilty for legal immigration… the other part are all the people and companies that take advantage of the " cheap labor" this hard worker people offer… but then in the reality what happens is that our schools are overcrowded and our neighbors are less safe each time new homes apartments are built and for some "linexplicable laws" ilegal people get to rent and even buy some apartments! You have to remember that this illegal people are also having problems in their own countries… and they are not representing neither the culture or the behavior of the country their are coming from.
Baileys may be sitting on 10 acres but what field do they have to play on? They have no green space and no elbow room.
Neither does Beech Tree have any more space due to the huge hill cutting the property in half. Essentially its a 3 acre campus…
and what's wrong with the Willston site? so what the lot is small. make it 3 stories to shrink the footprint. an urban styled school in the Falls Church area is appropriate these days.
