New farmers market coming to Mosaic District in Merrifield

Fresh produce from Central Farm Markets.
A new Sunday farmers market will open at the Mosaic District
in Merrifield May 4.
The Mosaic Central Farm Market, will offer fresh
items from more than 30 farms and artisan food producers from Virginia,
Maryland, and Pennsylvania, including seasonal produce, meat, poultry,
eggs, dairy products, baked goods, cheeses, fish, fresh flowers, and prepared
foods. The market will be open 9 a.m.-2 p.m. every Sunday through
October on District Avenue.

It’s the third market operated by Central Farm Markets. The
others are the Bethesda Central Farm Market in Bethesda, Md., and the Pike
Central Farm Market, in the North Bethesda/Rockville, Md., area. The Mosaic Market is supported by a grant from National Capital Contracting.

A special feature at the Mosaic will be the Cook’s Corner, hosted by local chef
Lynn Foster, featuring food demonstrations, market food tours, cooking classes,
recipes, and more. Celebrity chef Carla Hall called Foster “a tall ball of
energy and a food force to be reckoned with.”

Also at the market: local musicians, artisans, and
children’s activities. The highlight of the season will be two family-style farm-to-table
dinners, called “Sunday Supper at Mosaic,” with fresh farm food prepared by
Mosaic chefs and restaurateurs.
There are also plans in the works with the Virginia Wine Board to have tastings from local wineries. In addition, the market will donate fresh food to the local food bank, Food for Others.
The Fairfax County Park Authority operates 11 farmers markets, including two in the Annandale/Mason area: The Annandale Market at Mason District Park will be open Thursdays, 8 a.m.-noon, beginning May 1. The Wakefield Market at Wakefield Park will take place on Wednesdays, 2-6 p.m., beginning May 7.

  1. Wow! A farmers market I can bike to, and it will have wine too! (I promise not to bike drunk, though) Progress!
