Inova Health System senior leaders, elected officials, government representatives, hospital staff, former patients, and donors took part in a ceremony last week for the new $400 million Inova Women’s Hospital and Inova Children’s Hospital on the Fairfax Medical Campus. They wrote messages on a wall that will be on display in the new building.
The 650,000-square-foot building is expected to be completed in 2016. It’s the second phase of the Inova Fairfax expansion project. The first phase was the 11-story medical/surgical South Patient Tower that opened in January 2013.
The new Inova Women’s Hospital will have 192 private patient rooms, a dedicated women’s surgery center with eight operating rooms, 33 labor delivery and recovery suites, six cesarean-section operating rooms, a high-risk perinatal unit, an expanded antenatal testing center, lactation center, and family-friendly maternity suites.

The new Inova Children’s Hospital will have 116 private pediatric patient rooms, an expanded 108-bassinette level IIIC neonatal intensive-care unit, pediatric oncology unit, Northern Virginia’s only pediatric intensive care unit, and a child-life play area. It will have a separate child-friendly entrance and a number of features built specifically for children.
The project also includes an eight-story parking deck and new roads to improve access to the campus. The main entrance to the hospital complex will be shifted from Gallows Road to Woodburn Road.
The old patient tower is being completely renovated, and after that work is completed, possibly in late 2105, that building will be seamlessly connected to the new patient tower. The project was designed by Wilmot Sanz Inc. and is being built by Clark Construction.
What is going to happen to the current Womens and Childrens facility?
That hasn't been determined yet.
