New retail center planned for Annandale

An illustration of the future retail center at the former Wendy’s site in Annandale. [Willard]

The retail center planned for the former Wendy’s property in Annandale will be bigger than previously reported.

A site map on the leasing document by the Willard real estate company shows spaces for at least eight stores.

The building, identified as Eastgate Square, will have 13,600 square feet. Willard touts the site’s “abundant surface parking and great visibility.”

  1. I have some suggestions:
    Boost Mobile
    A needle exchange
    Covid testing
    Pawn shop
    A party store
    An indoor food court
    Homeless shelter
    Hot Topic
    Used tarp pagoda
    Sears

  2. Absolutely ugly architecturally. Looks like a good place for a massage parlors. UGLY! What would drive one to even go there? Not a tree to be seen.

  3. The typical responses above flummox me. I don’t see the need for more retail space. I agree there are more then plenty so-called low rent, ethnic, however-you-want-to-code-your-bias stores around.

BUT… More retail space lowers rents, which makes it’s easier for businesses to open and survive. And if all these places are able to stay open by catering to what you clearly think is the underclass, good for them. Shouldn’t we applaud people for making it honestly however they can?

But you guys don’t. You love the American dream but hate when most people try to live it. If you abhor the value system and culture of so many of the people in Annandale, why don’t you move someplace where you can surround yourself with culture and a value system that you don’t hate?

    1. Joe, those are well-reasoned and compelling points, if the American Dream still existed. It doesn’t. Small retail operations, especially in that shopping center, will not survive. If you need evidence, look around.

  4. So ugly. And can’t they find one recognizable brand to ‘anchor’ that corner? It’s sad that I wish we still had the KMart.

  5. I welcome additional retail in the Annandale core, but I might not judge the eventual structure and plan based on the schematic provided. Having a lot of retail makes the area busy and prosperous – jobs are created, money can be spent, the taxes from eight businesses are better than the vacant property there now. If a landowner believes that they can make money by putting up a building and filling it with tenants, that’s their business decision. Regarding the endless dreams commenters have about what they would like to see in Annandale (Wegman’s, Mosaic, national chains, etc.) – all of those exist within 10-15 minutes of the area. Why does Annandale need to look like every place else in this country?

  6. Man, I miss the Wendy’s. There was nothing better than sparking up a Marlboro after cleaning the Annandale high school bathrooms and grabbing some of that fresh chili.

Used to be quite the meeting spot for the kids a few years ago. The thespians put on concerts in the parking lot and sold gummy worms to strangers

  7. There is not enough room to put anything larger than the Wendy’s footprint in that location. Too bad the buyers dudn’t buy-out the car dealer down LRT past Braddock That would provide sufficient space for a major retailer. They also could have bought-out the ramshackle buildings on the side streets & LRT. IMO, the city center is just NOT enticing with all the run down buildings, some of which are empty.

  8. What’s with all the negativity? Yes, Annandale has huge problems because fairfax county hates us and refuses to give us any tax dollars but, hey, we have the block which I love. And the more local restaurants/stores populate the area, the more people will want to come to this area. Personally, I don’t want any national chains. We have enough of that throughout NOVA. I wish they could turn that whole shopping center into mixed use nice area like everyone else seems to get but again, yeah, fairfax county hates us. So I’m excited to get this place. It’s nicer than the empty wendys. I wish them luck.

    1. The BOS decided a long time ago (circa 2007) to deny permission to make that area into a mixed use development due to traffic concerns. Not sure if the county hates Annandale, but it has been neglected in terms of development.

      1. There should be more local support for this to done. I hope people who want this pays attention to the next BoS election.

        1. I hope so too. The election is in a couple of weeks, and we need to clean house in Fairfax County. When people go to vote, just remember the high property/vehicle tax everyone had to pay by October 5 – just sayin.

      2. The BOS is up for reelection in 2023. But I’ve given up on enough people voting to replace Penny Gross and the others so we will likely to continue to get what THEY decide to give us while paying through the teeth via increased taxes, reduced services, etc.

  9. Perhaps whomever succeeds Penny as our BOS representative will have better luck in driving positive development in Mason District? Ok, I’m not holding my breath.

  10. Please, please, please can’t any of the businesses plant a tree in that sea of asphalt. Other large parking areas have managed; can this one also?
