Nonprofits seek public donations for school supplies

School may be virtual this fall, but students still need school supplies. Children from lower-income households in our community need more help than ever this year, as the coronavirus pandemic is taking an economic toll on families.
Two Fairfax County nonprofits – Britepaths and Facets – have launched school supply drives with multiple ways to contribute.
Britepaths’ Collect for Kids Back to School Program has the goal of providing supplies for at least 2,500 students in the Justice High School and Fairfax High School pyramids.
The organization will provide pre-packaged supply kits to its partner schools for distribution to students with demonstrated need. It is collaborating with Fairfax County’s Collect for Kids partnership by purchasing school supply kits from Campus Survival Kits.
Thanks to this bulk ordering arrangement, a donation of $25 will provide all the necessary supplies for two students. Britepaths is working to raise $25,000 by Aug. 15.
Community members can donate funds via Britepaths’ secure online donation page or mail a check to 3959 Pender Drive, Suite 200, Fairfax, VA 22030. Write “BTS” in the memo line.
Donations to Britepaths will provide school supplies to these schools in the Justice pyramid: Baileys Upper Elementary School, Beech Tree ES, Belvedere ES, Parklawn ES. Sleepy Hollow ES, and Glasgow Middle School.
Members of the community can contribute to Facets’ 2020 Back to School Drive in several ways:
- Deliver supplies to Facets. Download the list of needed school supplies and purchase or collect as many as you can and drop them off at the organization’s main office, 10700 Page Ave., Building B, in Fairfax.
- Make a tax-deductible donation to Facets online, or send a check to 10700 Page Ave., Building B, Fairfax, VA 22030. Write “school supplies” on the memo line.
- Purchase school supplies through the Facets School Wish List on Amazon. When you buy from Amazon Smile and select Facets Cares as your charity of choice, a percentage of your purchase price will support the children, families, and individuals served by Facets.

No need for a backpack. Please don't respond with they may need one in the future. I ask, "Where is the backpack from last year? It was only used for about 6 and a half months." My kids did not get a new backpack every school year.
I’m normally all about giving to needy kids, but this one does kind of have me scratching my head. The school supply list that they have doesn’t make sense given online learning and what we were told during our ask-the-principal session, which indicated everything was going to be completely computer based. No need for backpacks. No need for 3 ring binders. No need for folders. At least not until school pivots to in person anyways – if it ever does. FCPS made it pretty clear that they would be doing everything digitally.
Considering FCPS will be giving out laptops and potentially also assisting with internet access as well, what’s there to buy at this time other than a desk for kids to work at – which incidentally there appears to be a run on desks right now.
