Sunset Grille shutting down after 23 years in Annandale

Annandale will lose a major landmark and fun nightspot, when
the Sunset Grille closes on May 31.
There were rumors that the Sunset was closing in February
2011, which were denied by the management, but this time it’s for real. A
message on the chalkboard says the bar is closing, and the staff are teary-eyed
talking about the end of an era.

The Sunset Grille has been at the heart of Annandale, on Columbia
Pike at the intersections of Little River Turnpike, Backlick, Ravensworth, and
Annandale roads for 23 years.
Sunset regulars, the
Thrillbillys, will perform one last time, on Thursday night.
“Maybe we’ll be able to reopen someplace else, but at this
time we just don’t know,” says staff member Keisha.

  1. OH MY GOD. I want to buy that place! It was such a good fun bar. Not really "biker" when I went there. Such a great location!

  2. Yet another local place closing down. What is the county supervisors doing for Mason District and Annandale. At this rate Annandale will look like a ghost town and I do not see anything changing without good leadership. Trophy Mart, Room Store, Blooms, Fuddruckers, Hallmark and now Sunset Grille, what is next. Other than are schools are way over capacity and the kids are in mega trailers and half of the kindergarten classes do not speak English. Don't also forget all the trash and day laborers/ loiterers on our streets.

  3. Also, Super Pets closed its Annandale store in 2011 and relocated to Springfield.
Several businesses opened in Annandale in the past two years: Petco, Dollar Tree, Breeze, Foster Bank, TD Bank, and Pelican Seafood, to name a few.

  4. Too bad there will be a Walgreens right in the middle of Annandale. Imagine if it was a village green, with trees, benches, a nice grassy area (kind of like in Vienna) Make it easy to walk there, and keep it a nice, safe, open place to be. Don't make it an island isolated by busy roads. The businesses around it could service that type of area – ice cream, drinks, coffee shop, etc. A place like Sunset Grill would have a place in the line-up. Instead there was a Fuddrucker's, which was mostly parking lot, now being replaced by a Walgreens, which will be a parking lot plus a drive-through.

  5. The meeting on June 18 referenced by the commenter focuses on Seven Corners – which definitely needs some revitalizing, too.

  6. There does seem to be a failure in leadership when it comes to revitalizing, energizing and cleaning up the Annandale area of Mason District. Appears that letting the area become nothing more than an ethnic enclave suits current leaders.

  7. What is the reason? Cant renew lease, lack of profit, sold to another entity? Why is the Grille closing?

  8. Racist? Geez, give me a break. Sorry if I am not enamored of businesses that only look to serve certain "ethnic" communities.
I believe in balance (racist though that may appear to others) and I see Annandale becoming only attractive to members of certain communities, and that's not a good balance in my book.

  9. Agreed. The problem around here is that too many people like to try to be the PC police. And now look where that can go… way too far out where no one wants to say anything out of fear of being labeled "racist" …WRONGLY labeled.

  10. Ok nobody is racist. I think the Grille will emerge somewhere more appropriate for their image, such as Richmond Highway, or Manassas, VA. Now cleanup Annandale and remove those ugly power lines please.

  11. I feel sad when things change and small town businesses close. It changes the character of Annandale. Hopefully something good will replace the space. On another note…what is up with the Fuddruckers parking lot??!!! It looks horrible, weeds overtaking it. Doesn't the land owner have an obligation to keep it looking nice until Walgreens is started?
