Ossian Park will have artifical turf field
The new field at the renovated Ossian Park will have artificial turf instead of natural turf as originally planned, says Rosemary Ryan, senior legislative aide to Braddock District Supervisor John C. Cooke. The renovation project is expected to cost less than expected, allowing for the turf upgrade and additional landscape plantings. [Click on the map to make it larger.]
The park, located next to Annandale High School at the intersection of Heritage Drive and Four Year Run, was once the site of the Ossian Hall plantation house. The park renovation is funded by a Fairfax County bond.
The completion date has been pushed back from mid-October to the end of the year, Ryan says. A stormwater drainage system, with retention tanks, has been installed under the parking lot. When completed, the park will have other sports facilities, a small amphitheater, tot lots, a picnic area, and new trails.
I don't think the park was the site of Ossian Hall – that was further south near Royster. It was named Ossian Hall Park in tribute to that house.
You're probably right. According to Fairfax County History Commission Chair Debbie Robinson, Ossian Hall was on the east side of Lake Accotink, between Little River Turnpike and Braddock Road. The Fitzhugh family, which built Ossian Hall, owned a huge amount of property in the area. Ossian Hall was burned down by the Annandale Fire Department in 1959 as part of a training exercise.
