Outrageous Xmas displays light up Annandale

What motivates people to turn their front yard into a spectacular Christmas fantasy every December? Nelson and Esther Perez, of 4006 Patricia St. in Annandale, host a large annual Christmas gathering, and members of their extended Filipino family look forward to the blaze of multicolored lights covering the front lawn, trees, and shrubs. Having run out of space in front, the display now extends to the backyard. [The photo doesn’t do it justice.]

Nelson says he and Esther began the annual decorating tradition about 15 years ago, and the display gets bigger every year. A large manger scene and a huge Santa snow globe are new additions for 2010. The display adds about $100 a month to their electric bill, Nelson says, but it’s worth it because, “my wife and I feel very good about lighting up the neighborhood.”
