Over 800 COVID deaths so far in Fairfax County

The Fairfax County Health District (FCHD) reached a grim milestone over the weekend – 800 people died from COVID-19. 

As of Feb. 2, there have been 60,690 total cases, 3,325 hospitalizations, and 807 deaths in the FCHD.  

The Annandale zip code (22003) has among the highest case counts in Fairfax County, with 7,403 per 100,000 persons. That compares to the county average of 5,289 per 100,000. 

Daily cases appear to be trending downward, after reaching the single biggest one-day peak of 1,523 cases on Jan. 17.

The FCHD receives about 13,600 vaccine doses a week from the state of Virginia’s allocation of 105,000 a week. 

According to the Virginia Department of Health, a total of 95,935 vaccination doses have been administered in Fairfax County.

So far, FCHD has administered 37,616 doses, and 15,864 people have received their second dose.

A federal program managed by CVS and Walgreens has vaccinated 2,590 residents and 2,870 staff at 45 skilled nursing and assisted living facilities in Fairfax County. Vaccinations are expected to be completed at 14 additional facilities by mid-February. 

In addition, Inova Health System has administered about 75,000 doses to healthcare workers, patients, teachers, and childcare employees. 

There are a total of 168,422 Fairfax County residents who registered for a vaccination and are waiting for the chance to schedule an appointment. 

Eligible Fairfax County residents – people age 65 and older, people with an underlying health condition, and healthcare workers – can register for a vaccination here or call 703-324-7404. People will receive an email with information about scheduling a vaccination appointment when slots become available. 

In other COVID news, the CDC is requiring people to wear face masks on public transportation and at transportation hubs, as of Feb. 2. That includes airplanes, ships, trains, subways, buses, taxis, rideshares, transit stations, and airports.
